This Action Plan considers elephant populations across Asia on the basis of size and provides recommendations to enhance their long-term survival. It also considers the management of elephants in captivity. Given that the basis for improved management of elephants throughout Asia must be sound systematic scientific research, the Action Plan recommends a number of research projects that need to be carried out in the field.

This book draws together, for the first time, the published research on the behaviour, ecology and welfare of elephants living in zoos, circuses, logging camps and other captive environments in a single comprehensive volume. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach, considering the work of zoo biologists, animal behaviour and welfare scientists, veterinarians, philosophers, zoo educators, tourism specialists, conservation biologists, lawyers and others with a professional interest in elephants. Elephants under Human Care: The Behaviour, Ecology, and Welfare of Elephants in Captivity is a valuable resource for zoo biology and animal welfare researchers. It is also useful for students and zoo professionals and managers looking for a comprehensive guide to current research on captive elephants. Although not intended as a husbandry manual, the book discusses some of the elephant welfare standards developed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) and their relationship to current knowledge of captive elephants. Includes results of captive studies compared with field studies of wild elephants Features original images of elephant behaviour as they live and behave under human care Includes results of the author’s original research including many original photographs Considers future implications of research for the welfare and conservation of elephants, both for elephants in captivity and those living in the wild

Keepers Of The Ark written by R. J. Ryan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Nature categories.

Keepers of the Ark is the true story of R. J. Ryans experience as an elephant keeper at the San Diego Wild Animal Park during the mid-1980s. It follows the daily life of not only the author, but also the elephants at one of the most prestigious facilities in the country. The reader will be able to understand for the first time the day to day life of captive elephants from someone who actually was involved in their care, and not from second hand information. Keepers of the Ark goes into explicit detail about how elephants are taken care of, from the time they are released in the morning, to the time they are locked up at night. This includes not only what they are fed, their physical care, their training, but also the deep emotional interactions between the elephants, and also between elephant and keeper. The story describes in graphic detail the daily beatings that the elephants endure in order to get them to perform for the public in rides and shows. It also goes into the intricate relationships that the elephants form between each other and the intense grief and sadness that they go through when they lose one of the herd members through death. The story eventually ends with the details of one of the largest animal abuse cases in California history involving one of the elephants at the Wild Animal Park. All of the events depicted in the story actually happened, none of it has been made up to enhance the storyline. Some of the names of the people involved have been changed because this isnt a story about them, but a story about the elephants. It is a universal story that happens in most zoos, parks, and circuses around the world, with very little exception. Hopefully with this story, people will forever look at captive elephants in a different light and will work towards a time when the conditons they live under will be changed for the better.

Elephant House written by Nigel Rothfels and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-14 with Nature categories.

In Elephant House, photographer Dick Blau and historian Nigel Rothfels offer a thought-provoking study of the Oregon Zoo’s Asian Elephant Building and the daily routines of its residents—human and pachyderm alike. Without an agenda beyond a desire to build a deeper understanding of this enigmatic environment, Elephant House is the result of the authors’ unique creative collaboration and explores the relationships between captive elephants and their human caregivers. Blau’s evocative photographs are complex and challenging, while Rothfels’s text offers a scholarly and personal response to the questions that surround elephants and captivity. Elephant House does not take sides in the debate over zoos but focuses instead on the bonds of attentiveness between the animals and their keepers. Accompanied by a foreword from retired elephant keeper Mike Keele, Elephant House is a frank, fascinating look at the evolving world of elephant husbandry.
