This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1873 edition. Excerpt: ... SKETCHES OF SIXTEEN YEARS' WORK AMONG ORIENTALS. CHAPTER I. THE EVIL, AND HOW OCCASIONED. "Found dead!" Who? Where? Has he no friends? How did he die? To these very natural questions, prompted by the common generosity of an English heart, we reply, " We don't know." But, gazing on the haggard face of the departed stranger, we conclude he has died in a land in which he was a foreigner; for his tattered clothes and swarthy features suggest that his birth-place cannot be far from the banks of the Ganges. The coroner and his jury, however, have just come to the unsatisfactory verdsct, "Found dead;" after having put off" the inquest to the present day, hoping to gain some information of the deceased; but all that is known is, a policeman found him, on a frosty winter night, dead on the pavement in one of the many avenues in High-street, Shadwell. This child of the sunny land must have been dead some time, for he was quite cold. Nothing was found upon him to tell who he was, or what were the hard circumstances that led to his death. There was a knife at his side, and his horny hands bore evidence of honest labour and hard toil. He must be one of the many Lascars who are engaged in bringing the produce of Hindustan to our isle. Poor fellow, he could have found neither help nor sympathy in this land of gold and philanthropy! Strange, indeed, in the midst of so many merchant princes made rich with Indian gold, that the stranger who brought us the precious things of the torrid zone, should die uncared for on a winter night in one of our London streets. But, perhaps, it is a solitary case, and has never occurred before, and may never occur again. What did the coroner say? Alas! he says, that no less than eight human beings of the same class have...

European Racism A History In Documents written by Lisa M. Todd and has been published by Broadview Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-22 with History categories.

European Racism collects more than 130 primary sources—from religious tracts, legal codes, and government edicts, to novel excerpts, paintings, illustrations, and songs—to help readers trace the development and spread of racism in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The volume is organized into six sections revealing how Europeans developed racist attitudes toward various groups: Jews, Muslims, Black Africans, Asians, the Romani, and global Indigenous Peoples. Sources demonstrate how racism intersects with gender roles, sexual identities, economic status, religious affiliation, national origin, and military alliances, and include examples of historical anti-racist resistance. There is a general volume introduction and six section introductions, and 42 illustrations; brief headnotes accompany each document; and marginal glossing throughout helps students with unfamiliar references and terminology. An alternative table of contents presents documents chronologically.

Muslims constitute Britain's second largest religious grouping, and writing about their experiences has found a new audience in recent years-though not always through a positive lens. But a proper historical treatment of their arrival, settlement and establishment had been conspicuously absent until Humayun Ansari's seminal work, reissued here in an updated edition. "The Infidel Within" draws together rich archival research and first-hand experience into a broad, integrated history of the Muslim presence in Britain. Among the topics addressed are migration and settlement in Britain before 1945, the evolution of a British Muslim identity, Muslim women and families, Muslims and education, and the growing mobilization of Muslims in Britain's political, religious and economic life. This definitive and sympathetic history, brought right up to date, is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand modern Britain.

This book focuses on British efforts to suppress the traffic in female slaves destined for Egyptian harems during the late-nineteenth century. It considers this campaign in relation to gender debates in England, and examines the ways in which the assumptions and dominant imperialist discourses of these abolitionists were challenged by the newly-established Muslim communities in England, as well as by English people who converted to or were sympathetic with Islam.

Curry written by Lizzie Collingham and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-06 with Cooking categories.

Curry serves up a delectable history of Indian cuisine, ranging from the imperial kitchen of the Mughal invader Babur to the smoky cookhouse of the British Raj. In this fascinating volume, the first authoritative history of Indian food, Lizzie Collingham reveals that almost every well-known Indian dish is the product of a long history of invasion and the fusion of different food traditions. We see how, with the arrival of Portuguese explorers and the Mughal horde, the cooking styles and ingredients of central Asia, Persia, and Europe came to the subcontinent, where over the next four centuries they mixed with traditional Indian food to produce the popular cuisine that we know today. Portuguese spice merchants, for example, introduced vinegar marinades and the British contributed their passion for roast meat. When these new ingredients were mixed with native spices such as cardamom and black pepper, they gave birth to such popular dishes as biryani, jalfrezi, and vindaloo. In fact, vindaloo is an adaptation of the Portuguese dish "carne de vinho e alhos-"-the name "vindaloo" a garbled pronunciation of "vinho e alhos"--and even "curry" comes from the Portuguese pronunciation of an Indian word. Finally, Collingham describes how Indian food has spread around the world, from the curry houses of London to the railway stands of Tokyo, where "karee raisu" (curry rice) is a favorite Japanese comfort food. We even visit Madras Mahal, the first Kosher Indian restaurant, in Manhattan. Richly spiced with colorful anecdotes and curious historical facts, and attractively designed with 34 illustrations, 5 maps, and numerous recipes, Curry is vivid, entertaining, and delicious--a feast for food lovers everywhere.
