"Just the kind of bridge we need to span the ideological wars and make schools work for teachers and their students." Ann Lieberman Senior Scholar, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Visiting Professor, Stanford University "In her supremely well-written and useful book, Dr. Solomon has woven together historical perspective, research, and her own considerable experience to address reforming schools in the 21st Century. After defining the problem (productive change), Dr. Solomon has examined ′old′ solutions and conceptualized new ones to create better schools for students." Nancy Goldman, Director of Curriculum Pearl River School District Pearl River, NY "Standards and implementation of the learning process go hand in hand. The Assessment Bridge makes us clearly aware of the present need for a bridge between the two so that standards may not create greater failure and the rejection of formal education by many children." Matthew Foley, Pastor Epiphany Roman Catholic Church We must ensure that tests serve the needs of education--not force education to fulfill needs of test creators. The Assessment Bridge is award-winning educator Pearl Solomon′s penetrating and cogent examination of today′s high-stakes standards-based testing movement, which seems to compromise effective teaching and learning rather than improve it. Committed teachers know the importance of student assessment as a guide to classroom instruction. Restoring assessment to its proper place in the curriculum is the goal of this clear-headed analysis. Chapters cover: The origins and history of the current testing movement How good tests guide teaching and learning How to balance standardized tests, curriculum standards, and critical local variables such as class size, socioeconomics, and teacher attitudes How to build bridges from test anxiety to improved student learning, teacher training, curriculum and instruction, and school administration and leadership How to recruit, train, and nurture a new generation of talented, committed, and effective teachers Emphasizing the positive at all times, Solomon guides us toward creation of better schools where the best teachers and school leaders link tests to standards, curriculum, and improved student learning.

Captures Current Developments in Bridge Design and Maintenance Recent research in bridge design and maintenance has focused on the serviceability problems of older bridges with aging joints. The favored solution of integral construction and design has produced bridges with fewer joints and bearings that require less maintenance and deliver increased durability. Bridge Deck Analysis, Second Edition outlines this growing development, and covers the structural analysis of most common bridge forms. It introduces reliability analysis, an emergent method that allows bridge engineers to determine risk when maintaining older or damaged bridges. Explains the Background Theory along with Practical Tools This book includes practical examples of everyday problems in bridge engineering, and presents real-life examples of the application of reliability analysis. The authors show how reliability analysis can determine structural safety even for bridges which have failed a deterministic assessment. They also update other chapters to reflect the most current advancements towards more sophisticated analysis, and the more widespread use of finite element software. What’s New in this Edition: Incorporates new research on soil-structure interaction A new section with examples of how to analyze for the effects of creep Greatly expands the sections on 3-D brick finite elements Now consistent with both Eurocodes and AASHTO standards An appropriate resource for senior undergraduates taking an advanced course on bridge engineering, Bridge Deck Analysis is also suitable for practicing engineers, and other professionals involved in the development of bridge design.

Bridge authorities in the UK are currently facing a large programme of bridge assessment and strengthening. This has been caused, in part, by the necessity of ensuring that the European Union deadline for allowing 40-tonne lorries on to UK roads can be met. Many bridges have failed theoretical assessments and some bridge owners, frustrated by the fact that many failed structures are apparently in good condition and showing no signs of distress, have resorted to load testing their bridges to try to provide additional information. A National Steering Committee for the Load Testing of Bridges was set up to examine the role of bridge load testing as a tool for assisting the assessment process. The National Steering Committee consists of representatives from all major bridge owners including the Highways Agency, the County Surveyors Society, the London Bridges Engineering Group, Railtrack and the British Waterways Board. It also includes representatives from consulting engineers and universities and has the support of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The overall objective of the National Steering Committee was to produce authoritative guidance on load-testing techniques; which could be used by the practising engineer to determine capacities of existing bridges/structures that are safe, prudent and minimize levels of restriction to the transport infrastructure. In June 1995 the committee appointed Rendel Palmer & Tritton in association with Peter Lindsell & Associates and supported by Professors Bakht, Clark and Harding as consultants to carry out a preliminary study of all the available information on bridge load testing. They were to recommend a detailed methodology which would form the basis of a brief to consultants appointed to produce authoritative guidelines for the load testing of bridges. Their report concluded that there is a place for load testing in the evaluation of bridges and other structures and that load testing is a valid tool for bridge managers. They also concluded that there was enough information and experience available to permit safe and effective guidelines to be written. As a result of the preliminary study the National Steering Committee decided to divide the second stage work and restrict the scope of this document to guidelines for supplementary load testing. Work on proof and proving load testing is being carried out by others under the auspices of the Highways Agency. The guidelines contained in this document were not drafted in a prescriptive form, but seek to provide advice on the appropriate use of supplementary load testing as an aid to assessment by calculation. The guidelines have been written to enable engineers to determine: when it is appropriate to consider the use of supplementary load testing; the level of risk, both public safety and economic, associated with load testing; how to plan and carry out a load test including the level of expertise necessary, the appropriate loading methods and the type and quantity of instrumentation required. In addition, the document is intended to be a source of information on load testing, measuring equipment and specialist techniques that engineers can use for reference.

Fatigue And Fracture Of Non Metallic Materials And Structures written by Andrea Spagnoli and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-23 with Technology & Engineering categories.
The mechanics of fracture and fatigue have produced a huge body of research work in relation to applications to metal materials and structures. However, a variety of non-metallic materials (e.g., concrete and cementitious composites, rocks, glass, ceramics, bituminous mixtures, composites, polymers, rubber and soft matter, bones and biological materials, and advanced and multifunctional materials) have received relatively less attention, despite their attractiveness for a large spectrum of applications related to the components and structures of diverse engineering branches, applied sciences and architecture, and to the load-carrying systems of biological organisms. This book covers the broad topic of structural integrity of non-metallic materials, considering the modelling, assessment, and reliability of structural elements of any scale. Original contributions from engineers, mechanical materials scientists, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians are presented, applying both experimental and theoretical approaches.
