‘Athletic CEOs: Leadership in Turbulent Times’ is about CEOs who do not lead by the book: people who score low on emotional intelligence, do not praise their subordinates and rarely provide constructive feedback or celebrate small wins. Yet it is also a book about high-performing transformational leaders: Alexander Dyukov (Gazprom Neft), German Gref (Sberbank), Eugene Kaspersky (Kaspersky Lab), and Vitaly Saveliev (Aeroflot). Each of these leaders have created formidable enterprises that deliver sustainable growth in profits and shareholder value; set new standards for the industry; leave a positive impact on their employees and on the country and the regions they operate in; and – most remarkably – continue to reinvent themselves. Having studied the work of these leaders for a decade, Stanislav Shekshnia, Alexey Ulanovsky and Veronika Zagieva’s model of Athletic Leadership summarizes the unique characteristics of these leaders and their leadership.

“From the Bench to the Boardroom, Michael MacDonald shares his journey from his college basketball career at Rutgers to executive positions at Xerox and Medifast. His leadership, work ethic, and persistence, which were on display every step of the way, have made him a valued member of our board at the Jimmy V Foundation.” —Mike Krzyzewski, Naismith Hall of Fame coach, Duke University “Mike holds a deep reverence and appreciation for his time at Rutgers, as well as for the opportunities that Rutgers has provided him. As a letterwinner on the Rutgers men’s basketball teams in the 1970s, Mike took his student-athlete experience and translated these learned lessons to successes in his career…. His time as a Rutgers student-athlete, alumnus, board member, donor, and father/father-in-law of three Rutgers alumni continues to leave an indelible legacy on our alma mater. I am proud to call him not only a great teammate, but an even better friend.” —Marco Battaglia, Rutgers Football All-American and Cincinnati Bengals Player “I believe the combination of an excellent education and participation in highly competitive sports programs provides invaluable preparation for life after school is over. The best sources of knowledge about the benefits of such a background are people who have been there. Mike MacDonald fits the bill. And he is particularly well suited to write about his experiences because of an amazing ability to recollect the details of his formative years. A student athlete at Rutgers, he was part of the school's then outstanding basketball team. He went on to use this and similar pre-college experiences to build an exceptional business career. That’s part of his story but those of us who know him well would add that he is the epitome of a ‘good man.’ I have seen him close up with family, friends, and others for years. He is a great husband, dad, and grandfather, kind and generous, enthusiastic, and always on the go. You will enjoy what he has to say.” —Gene Renna, Retired Senior Executive, Exxon Mobil “Mike MacDonald represents the absolute best of Rutgers University and is an inspiration to everyone on campus. From the day I met Mike, he has always made himself available to mentor, guide, and motivate both our student-athletes and our coaching staff. As an alumnus, he has given back generously and led the charge in ensuring that Rutgers continues to be a beacon of higher education. I’ve always admired his ability to juggle the roles of family man, businessman, and leader in the Rutgers community. His path from Rutgers is a shining example for student-athletes of the future. He has succeeded in every aspect of life and continues to give back to the community that molded him. To give Mike MacDonald the ultimate compliment a coach can give, simply put, he is a winner.” —Steve Pikiell, Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Rutgers University

The truth about freedom from fears, healing mental pain, achieving true success and clarity, and wisdom that runs through all areas. There are no recipes, instructions or cures herein. This book is for those who are serious about it alone. Note: This book is a diary. Those seeking perfection and beauty in form should not read it. _____ Voices about the author "I remembered again what matters in the daily being-with-me. That my mind knows me best, knows exactly how it hurts me and it does nothing but pull me into its absurd world is present for me every day. I see so clearly now how much I have been his slave lately. Now it is different. Living consciously. No longer being a slave to him. Understanding my truth. Following my intuition. Trust. All of these are my new obsessions. My presence my weapon. Thanks for reminding me!" - Robert B. "No question about it: the best advisor when it comes to getting the many ailments your head causes you out of the way for good. Without making you feel like you still have to learn anything." - Rebecca B. "For anyone who is tired of the endless search for "redemption", Marius is spot on. I haven't had this much insight in 10 years of "self help". Thank you!" - Alfred P. About the author Marius Großhans dedicates his life to truth and people, to recognize the only problem of their lives, the mind, and to free it from its domination. He lives alternately in Madeira and Bulgaria. Excerpt Someone recommends a method. It is a lie. The person does not know it, but his mind knows it. The plan: "The method keeps me in average, in lie. If I spend my life doing one method after another, I will never arrive anywhere." What does "arrive" mean? The greatest enemy of the mind, is the absolute quality of the present experience. Losing yourself in the moment. To need nothing more. To want nothing more. To see nothing more as wrong. That would be its death. An untruthful athlete, tries this and that. His mind falls in love with a method. The "Woozy Loozy" method. It is new. That is why it is exciting. Everything that is new keeps a person under the illusion that there is hope for his problem. The athlete wants to get stronger. He wants his exercises to be more effective. So his problem is not being strong enough and not being effective enough. Few will understand the following. The athlete has fallen in love with "not being strong enough" and "not being effective enough" because that, is his problem. His intention to want to change it automatically makes it a problem and a problem is fodder for the mind. Doing something to change something, using a method, believing something is not right as it is, using something as a means to an end to get somewhere, main thing away from the status quo, creates suffering and keeps the athlete in mediocrity. Methods imply to the athlete's mind that the current state is a problem that needs to be solved. He turns it into an unsolvable problem. The end of the search, the end of the use of methods, the end of the rejection of the status quo, robs the mind of the illusion that there is something to be solved .... and brings to light the lie that kept one in that belief. The end of the search is the realization that there is nothing to search for. And that the eternal search reveals the only problem that the person you see when you look in the mirror. Namaste.
