The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has occupied a salient position in the history of eastern North America for at least the past 1000 years. Initially the species occupied a prominant niche in the prolific web of life that existed throughout its former occurrence area; millions of pounds of salmon were produced annually from the freshwater streams between New York and Ungava - a resource that was a principal food source for the Amerindian cultures which shared its range. In a chronological and cumulative way, the salmon became an increasingly important factor in both the domestic and commercial life of the developing colonies; it provided a recreational outlet for the sportsman, and evolved as a principal object of intellectual and scientific investigation. The documented specifics of the salmon's history, however, are largely comprised of repetitive instances of overexploitation, careless destruction of stocks and their environment, and ineffectual conservation actions. Despite the species' former importance, its more recent history is one of declining presence, and its destiny appears to be extinction. By documenting this story of discovery, exploitation, and decline, the urgent need for the employment of sound resource management practices to preserve the salmon is emphasized. Destruction of habitat is the major cause for loss of biodiversity including variation in life history and habitat ecology. Each species and population adapts to its environment, adaptations visible in morphology, ecology, behaviour, physiology and genetics. Here, the authors present the population ecology of Atlantic salmon and brown trout and how it is influenced by the environment in terms of growth, migration, spawning and recruitment. Salmonids appeared as freshwater fish some 50 million years ago. Atlantic salmon and brown trout evolved in the Atlantic basin, Atlantic salmon in North America and Europe, brown trout in Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia. The species live in small streams as well as large rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal seas and oceans, with brown trout better adapted to small streams and less well adapted to feeding in the ocean than Atlantic salmon. Smolt and adult sizes and longevity are constrained by habitat conditions of populations spawning in small streams. Feeding, wintering and spawning opportunities influence migratory versus resident lifestyles, while the growth rate influences egg size and number, age at maturity, reproductive success and longevity. Further, early experiences influence later performance. For instance, juvenile behaviour influences adult homing, competition for spawning habitat, partner finding and predator avoidance. The abundance of wild Atlantic salmon populations has declined in recent years; climate change and escaped farmed salmon are major threats. The climate influences through changes in temperature and flow, while escaped farmed salmon do so through ecological competition, interbreeding and the spreading of contagious diseases. The authors pinpoint essential problems and offer suggestions as to how they can be reduced. In this context, population enhancement, habitat restoration and management are also discussed. The text closes with a presentation of what the authors view as major scientific challenges in ecological research on these species.

Every spring, for thousands of years, the rivers that empty into the North Atlantic Ocean turn silver with migrating fish. Among the crowded schools once swam the King of Fish, the Atlantic salmon. The first Wild Trout Symposium (1974) was sponsored by Trout Unlimited and the United States Department of the Interior. The second Symposium (1979) added the Federation of Fly Fisherman as a sponsor. Five years later (1984) the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Forest Service joined. In 1989 , the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the American Fisheries Society joined. These symposia began with a concentration on management, then recognized that more than 'management' was required in ongoing efforts to enhance wild salmonid fisheries. Subsequent symposia began to examine a broader range of environmental and social factors influencing wild salmonids. The originators hoped that each symposium would be a building block upon which the succeeding symposium could provide insights and research which future sessions could revisit. Along with the broadening of sponsorship, we have grown , we have gained recognition, and we look forward to expanding our contribution to the cause of wild salmonids. We hope these Proceedings will stimulate readers thinking and efforts on behalf of our wild salmonid resources , and plan to participate with us in Wild Trout V.
