Written for auditory clinicians and researchers alike, this is the first monograph on this important area of auditory science that traces the international research effort from its origins in the 1970s to the present day. Comprising contributions from experts in a range of disciplines including auditory physiology, engineering, medicine and audiology, the book presents comprehensive and authoritative coverage of the generation and recording of the ASSR and the clinical applications of the response.

Following an extensive literature review, an online tutorial was developed on the Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR). The literature review covers the following areas: auditory evoked potentials, history o the ASSR, neural generators of the ASSR, terminology unique to the ASSR, recording stimuli, stimulation techniques, analysis techniques for the ASSR, technical and recording parameters for the ASSR, subject factors, frequency and place specificity of the ASSR, clinical applications, calibration, and other considerations and future directions. The purpose of this website is to be a central information source of evidence-based practice for Doctor of Audiology (Au. D.) students and clinical audiologists with less than five-years experience with this auditory evoked potential. This website is easy to navigate, has animated figures describing various topics of the ASSR, and includes printer friendly downloads. The major topics of the website include: neural generators of the ASSR, terminology unique to the ASSR, stimuli utilized, stimulation techniques, analysis techniques, technical and recording parameters, subject variables, threshold estimation, calibration, and clinical applications.

The Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) is an auditory evoked potential (AEP) that can be used to accurately and objectively estimate hearing thresholds from infants through adults and in people with various types and degrees of hearing loss. For this reason and because of its potential ease of use, many clinical audiologists are interested in learning more about this response, but the ASSR has unique terminology and there are few resources aimed at making the ASSR more accessible for daily clinical use. This goal of this project is to create and publish a tutorial to provide students and audiologists with a resource that covers all of the relevant topics needed to learn and use ASSR clinically.

Background: The Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) is an auditory evoked potential (AEP) that can be used to objectively estimate hearing sensitivity in individuals with normal hearing sensitivity as well as those with various degrees and configurations of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Purpose: This purpose of this project is to create a tutorial on the ASSR for audiologists and AuD students who have limited (1 - 5 years) clinical experience with AEPs. It is the authors' hope that this manuscript can serve as a central resource for current information regarding the various aspects of this response. Design: This tutorial has been organized into various sections including: the history of the ASSR, unique terminology associated with this response, the types of stimuli used to elicit the response, two common stimulation methods, two common ways to objectively analyze the response and a discussion of the frequency and place specificity of this response for both air and bone conduction testing. This manuscript contains a glossary of key terms located at the end of the document. The tutorial contains numerous figures which attempt to walk the reader through key concepts associated with this response. Several tables provide a summary of the accuracy of the ASSR in estimating pure tone air and bone conduction thresholds for individuals with normal hearing sensitivity as well as those with SNHL. Topics such as the influence of degree and configuration of SNHL as well as the effects of single frequency versus multiple frequency stimulation techniques on the accuracy of estimating air-conduction behavioral thresholds via ASSR are discussed. Similarly, the effects of bone conduction oscillator placement, coupling force, the number of recording channels, and the influence of neuro-maturation are discussed for estimating bone-conduction behavioral thresholds via ASSR. Conclusion: Most researchers agree that in the future, ASSR testing will play an important role in clinical audiology across various populations. Therefore it is important for clinical audiologists and AuD students to have a good basic understanding of the technical concepts associated with this response as well as a knowledge of optimal stimulus and recording parameters used to record this response.
