This book is an examination and evaluation from a historical perspective of the alliance that was established and forged between the former Taoiseach and President of Ireland, Eamon de Valera, and the former President of Maynooth and Archbishop of Melbourne, Australia, Dr Daniel Mannix. The book will examine how the alliance between the two men played a pivotal role in Ireland’s push for independence. The Archbishop’s role is used as a symbol of the vast Irish diaspora worldwide and how their support, both financially and physically through demonstrations for Ireland, helped keep the push for autonomy alive. Having examined the role the Archbishop played in his alliance with de Valera and the clergy, the book appraises how Dr Mannix, so revered at one stage in Irish society, became such an isolated figure after 1925. Irish history has largely neglected the role of the Archbishop. This historical analysis, grounded in research of both primary and secondary sources including previously undocumented oral evidence, archival papers, written public and private correspondence between the two characters and visual sources, will help to replenish his role.

Winner of the 2016 Australian Literature Society’s Gold Medal and the National Biography Award. Daniel Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne from 1917 until his death, aged ninety-nine, in 1963, was a towering figure in Melbourne's Catholic community. But his political interventions had a profound effect on the wider Australian nation too. Award-winning biographer Brenda Niall has made some unexpected discoveries in Irish and Australian archives which overturn some widely held views. She also draws on her own memories of meeting and interviewing Mannix to get to the essence of this man of contradictions, controversies and mystery. Mannix is not only an astonishing new look at a remarkable life, but a fascinating depiction of Melbourne in the first half last century. Brenda Niall is one of Australia’s foremost biographers. She is the author of five award-winning biographies, including her acclaimed accounts of the Boyd family. In 2016 she won the Australian Literature Society’s Gold Medal and the National Biography Award for Mannix. Brenda has degrees from the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University and Monash University. In 2004 she was awarded the Order of Australia for ‘services to Australian literature, as an academic, biographer and literary critic’. She frequently reviews for the Age, Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Book Review. ‘For readers interested in the political and cultural life of Australia during the first half of the 20th century, Niall’s highly readable biography will reward handsomely.’ Books & Publishing ‘With characteristic insight, sensitivity, and tact, Niall confirms that Daniel Mannix is a major, if elusive, figure in the modern history of Australia, Ireland, and the Catholic Church...a balanced and convincing account of Mannix’s life and times.’ Australian Book Review ‘Brenda Niall’s central challenge was to uncover the personal face of Mannix from his public speeches...She does this modestly and penetratingly.’ Catholic News ‘This is the best life of Mannix we have...Writing from inside the Melbourne Catholic experience, Brenda Niall shows how people’s affection for Mannix muted their criticisms of him—even if they knew better.’ Global Pulse ‘I should say that I expected to take my time over this biography, as I usually do, reading a chapter every other day. But not so, I could not put it down.’ ANZ LitLovers ‘For my money, Brenda Niall’s Mannix is the most wise, shrewd and elegant biography yet produced of this complex and beguiling man. Niall’s irresistible prose strengthens the candour of this fine book.’ Age ‘Calmly magisterial...Niall gives a sense of Mannix’s greatness and of why we can still be awed by him.’ Australian ‘An extraordinary man and an extraordinary book.’ Weekly Times ‘Among living Australian biographers, only Philip Ayres matches Brenda Niall for painstaking research serving narratives at once spirited and judicious.’ Spectator ‘This book is the work of a master of the art of biography...Gripping.’ Irish Echo ‘A fond and fluent life of Mannix that captures the crispness and the passion, the humour and the enigma of the man who meddled with politics like a master magician.’ Sydney Review of Books ‘[Niall] has written a generous and penetrating biography.’ Madonna Magazine

Daniel Pratt Mannix 3rd was the quintessential man of his time and the manner in which he lived his life mirrored the strengths and weaknesses of his age. At four, he spoke Mandarin Chinese better than he did English. When he went out to play he wore a false pigtail pinned to the back of his cap. It was a practical necessity for a little American boy in the China of 1882 who wanted to be accepted by his Chinese playmates; it was also the beginning of a lifetime education in the ways of the world. His country was embarking on a similar education. Pratt's father was a Marine officer who had been "lent" to Empress Dowager Tzu Hsi's government for the purpose of opening a torpedo school to train Chinese technicians. The mission of the ship on which he served was to "open Korea" — then a vassal state of China's — as Commodore Perry had recently opened Japan. The United States was taking its first steps away from a hundred self-sufficient years of "splendid isolation". In 1885, when the Mannix family left China, the U.S. Army was smaller than Switzerland's, and the Navy could not boast even one battleship. By 1898, when Pratt was a second classman at Annapolis, the Navy had grown. In fact, one of its several battleships, the Maine, mysteriously blew up in Havana harbor. Pratt kept a diary of his service on the U.S.S. Indiana during the war with Spain that followed that incident, unwittingly chronicling the fading era of wooden ships and iron men. It was a short war and when it was over the spoils of victory brought the United States a new international respect. "In a few short months," President McKinley said, "we have become a world power." For the quarter century following his graduation, in June 1900, Pratt Mannix followed the sea — with fierce devotion to his country, with endless enthusiasm for discovering the distant and unfamiliar. He was not disappointed. There was beauty — the breathtaking first view of the towers of Constantinople at sunrise; satisfaction — having a new oil-burning destroyer as his first command, and quelling a riot without a single shot fired. There were unique challenges — in the Philippines, dodging the equally murderous charge of water buffalo as well as the surgically precise aim of a barong by a Moro guerrilla, or, in Germany, avoiding a Prussian duel by serving a brandy smash punch beforehand. But the most perilous challenge of all was participating in the highly secret mine barrage in the last months of World War I. A total of 70,113 steel globes packed with TNT were planted in 230 miles of the North Sea between Norway and Scotland as a final deterrent to the German U-boat "stilettos". The breadth and pace of this fascinating memoir are as much a reflection of the man who lived it as they are of the dramatic era it records. Fighter, peacekeeper; pragmatist, romantic; humorist, philosopher; lover, husband, father — he was each of these. Of necessity, and later by preference, Pratt spent little time in his homeland. There are some men who truly are, like Pratt perhaps, Whitman's voyager on "trackless seas, fearless for unknown shores".

The History Of Torture written by Daniel P. Mannix and has been published by eNet Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with History categories.

Torture has been an intrinsic part of the legal process in most cultures for centuries. Indeed, the violence we witness daily in our own society and recent revelations about the continued use of torture, seems proof that inflicting extreme mental or physical pain on an individual to achieve one's own ends is not a taboo practice buried in the past. This incomparable, extremely thorough book — told with a frightening and factual honesty — examines every aspect of torture: professional torturers, theories and techniques, the role of torture in history, moral implications, and the refinements brought to the practice of torture by individual fanatics, religious groups, the military, and, indeed, entire cultures. For such transgressions against society as adultery, heresy and espionage, from the primitive snake pit to the sophistication of brainwashing, there have been literally thousands of techniques devised to distort both the body and the mind in order to satisfy the sadistic needs of those who command, perform and witness human torture. At the time of its first publication (1964), The History of Torture was the most complete repository of information on the subject ever assembled in one volume.

Santamaria written by Bartholomew Augustine Santamaria and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Australia categories.

Peter Coleman has described him as 'one of the three most influential personalities in Australian politics since the war.'Graham Freudenberg said,'Santamaria was unique in Australian history as her only political intellectual in the high European tradition.'Malcolm Muggeridge (in his Foreword)stated:'In his last years Dr Evatts mind was not at its most lucid, but there was one thing that would arouse in him a kind of frenzy it was the word"Santamaria"'.BA Santamaria has been a unique force in Australian politics for over fifty years. He remains active and controversial forty years after the disastrous split in which he was a pivotal force and which kept Labor out of office for another two decades. His role, in association with the legendaryCardinal Mannix and the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, in organising the anti-Communist Movement, is still fascinating and misrepresented. His relations with figures such as Mannix (his great mentor), Dr Evatt, Arthur Calwell and Gough Whitlam are complex and vividly recalled in this book. Asdirector of the National Civic Council and Australias most prominent Catholic layman and intellectual, Santamaria has been an important opinion leader whose activities as ideologue, organiser and spokesman have involved him in much controversy throughout his career. The first edition of Against the Tide appeared in 1981 and sold 7000 copies. Now Mr Santamaria adds fifteen years to his compelling political memoirs. Of particular importance are his relections on the rise of Labor after the economic rationalism, and the modernization of the Catholic Church. One ofthe most effective and hated political operators in Australian history, Santamaria again proves to be one of its most cadid autobiographers.
