Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 7: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society, for the Foreign and British Birds in Freedom and Captivity The completion of the present Volume brings our second series to a close, the Committee having considered it desirable to commence a new series with the issue for November. We believe that the present Volume will be found equal in every way to those that have preceded it, and to contain a large amount of valuable avicultural matter. The usual number of plates, both coloured and otherwise, have appeared, and are well up to the Society's high standard. The year has seen some considerable changes as regards its officers. In May last Mr. Seth-Smith, being obliged to resign the post of Hon. Editor, on his appointment as Curator of Birds at the Zoological Society's Gardens, the Committee thought it advisable to appoint an Editor at a small salary, and were fortunate enough to secure the services of Mr. Frank Finn, certain members of the Society having generously contributed to a fund raised for this purpose. The Committee regret to announce that the Hon. Business Secretary, Mr. T. H. Newman, having served for five years, has decided that he will not seek re-election for another term. They are pleased to announce that Mr. R.I. PococK has kindly consented to fill the post. Mr. Frank Andrews will act as Secretary's Assistant at a small remuneration. As we are about to embark upon a new series, the Committee sincerely hope that the members will make a great effort to increase the size and usefulness of the journal by their contributions. We want, not only records of the breeding of rare birds, but accounts of common species of foreign birds and of British Birds. Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 12: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of British and Foreign Birds in Freedom and Captivity The year which ends with this number has been one of the most difficult of the so-called "peace" years; but the Society has come through the ordeal, and rather than look back at the trials of the past we should look forward to the future with confidence and hope, seeing the signs that are visibly pointing to a real revival of aviculture. Several large consignments of birds have come into this country in the course of the year, and the importation of foreign species is the most important factor in the support of the Society, for without birds to keep aviculture alive we can neither get contributions to our Magazine nor hope to secure new members. The difficulties of the present time have caused many aviculturists to give up their hobby and resign their membership, and unless these resignations can be made good, it will be impossible to enlarge the Magazine so long as the cost of production remains as high as it is at present. It is to be hoped, therefore, that members will do their best to induce their friends to join the Society and will send the Editors accounts of the doings of their birds, so as to help to get back to the days of a Magazine of thirty-two pages and a coloured plate.
