Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 4: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of Foreign and British Birds in Freedom and Captivity; November, 1905, to October, 1906 Once more we have come to the close of our avicultural year, and, as we survey the pile of monthly numbers of the Magazine, we feel satisfied that a volume has been produced that our members may be proud of. The Magazine has kept well up to its high standard of quality, and many very valuable articles, calculated to increase our knowledge of the life-habits of birds, have been published. Although the Balance Sheet for the year will not be ready for some weeks, we believe that, when it appears, it will show our financial position to be a very satisfactory one. In the volume now completed is recorded the successful breeding of the following species for the first time in the United Kingdom: Forsten's Lorikeet (Trichoglossus forstenm), the Pileated Finch (Coryphospingus pilealus), the Regent Bower-bird (Sericulus melinus), the Pectoral Finch (Munia pectoralis), the Green Avadavat (Stictospiza formosa), Bourke's Parrakeet (Neophema bourkei), the Australian Green-winged Pigeon (Chalcophaps chrysochlora), the Tambourine Dove (Tympanistria tympanistria), the Black Tanager (Tachyphonus melaleucus), the Great-billed Andaman Parrakeet (Palaeornis magnirostris), the Yellowish Finch (Sycalis arvensis), and the Harlequin and Australian Quails (Coturnix delegorguei and C. pectoralis.) Six coloured plates, one figuring a species (Trichoglossus johnstoniae) named after one of our members and almost new to science; a number of uncoloured plates, and numerous text illustrations have been published. Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 3: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of Foreign and British Birds It is proposed to publish under this heading a series Of articles, by different authors, upon some of the species, both British and foreign, which are comprised in this sub-family. Asa rule, two articles will be published each month during the current 'year, one of which will deal with a British and the other with a foreign species, but no attempt will be made to observe any scientific arrangement in the order in which the articles will, appear. The classification adopted by Dr. R. Bowdler Sharpe in the British Museum Catalogue of Birds will be adhered to, but it must not be inferred that all the writers who contribute to this series necessarily approve Of that classification. Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, 1898, Vol. 4 Mr. Low obtained them in January, 1873. and he states that the native name of the species is "Burong puyu puyu." Dr. Russ informs us that since 1870, single pairs of the Chinese Quail have been occasionally imported; that it is much sought after for the bird-room, and has 011 several occasions been bred; that according to Mr. E. Berin, who indeed was the first to breed it, it is shy and timid, needs a place of retirement, one of which he provided in the form of a straw covering leaning against the back wall of the cage or bird-rooin. "At the breeding-season the male and female arc continually together, the former being gentle and watchful; both build the nest; even- disturbance is to be avoided. From the experience of this and other breeders, Dr. Russ gathers that the laying consists of from four to seven clear brownish, generally dark dotted eggs. Incubation lasts from sixteen to eighteen days. The uestling-down is yellowish, and the young acquire their full colouring when three months old. Early in the present year, a good many pairs of this Quail came into the London market, and were offered to the public at prices even lower than those noted by Dr. Russ. Two pairs were offered to me, and I was so delighted with the colouring of these quaint little things that I gladly added them to my collection. My experience has not altogether coincided with that of Mr. Berin, as I shall now show. When first introduced into a tolerably large aviary I found the Chinese Quails exceedingly nervous, so that when I entered the aviary they would fly recklessly upwards, striking their heads against the wire netting under the glass roofing and falling heavily to the earth; but 110 sooner did they perceive that my intentions were never hostile, than they contented themselves with merely running out of my way or leaping in a surprising manner to a raised bank of earth, bounded in front by a wall nearly two feet high from the sanded floor. At one end of the bank above noted, I provided a place of retirement by sticking a row of fir-twigs into the earth about six inches from the back wall: behind this partial screen the Quails often sat down during the day-time, sometimes scratching a shallow depression in the soil and dragging in a little hay and a few feathers; but at other times they settled down all together in an open corner of the aviary upon the sand, and at night they frequently went to roost in another open corner upon a cemented wall. Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 4: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of Foreign and British Birds, in Freedom and Captivity; November 1912 to October 1913 The past year has brought about important changes in the Executive caused by the retirement of Mr. J. Lewis Bonhote from the joint office of Treasurer and Editor. The Editorship has been kindly undertaken by Mr. H. D. Astley and the Treasurership by Mr. B. Thomasset. The Council wishes to take this opportunity of recording its appreciative recognition of Mr. Bonhote's services to the Society. He has always taken an active interest in its welfare; and his tenure of the two posts above-mentioned was marked by an improvement in the financial status of the Society and in the quality of its Magazine. He also acted as editor of the volume on "Practical Bird Keeping" published this year by the Society. The Council is also desirous of expressing its indebtedness to Mr. P. W. Farmborough, chartered accountant, who, in the capacity of Auditor to the Society, entered thoroughly into the business relations of the Society with its publishers and made several useful and practical suggestions concerning the administration of the Society on a more secure footing, legal and financial. It will be evident to all members of the Society that the zeal and energy displayed by Mr. Astley as Editor has improved, and added interest to, the Magazine. This, with other factors, has led to a marked increase in the number of members and has placed the Society in a more flourishing position than it has ever previously occupied. Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 12: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of British and Foreign Birds in Freedom and Captivity The year which ends with this number has been one of the most difficult of the so-called "peace" years; but the Society has come through the ordeal, and rather than look back at the trials of the past we should look forward to the future with confidence and hope, seeing the signs that are visibly pointing to a real revival of aviculture. Several large consignments of birds have come into this country in the course of the year, and the importation of foreign species is the most important factor in the support of the Society, for without birds to keep aviculture alive we can neither get contributions to our Magazine nor hope to secure new members. The difficulties of the present time have caused many aviculturists to give up their hobby and resign their membership, and unless these resignations can be made good, it will be impossible to enlarge the Magazine so long as the cost of production remains as high as it is at present. It is to be hoped, therefore, that members will do their best to induce their friends to join the Society and will send the Editors accounts of the doings of their birds, so as to help to get back to the days of a Magazine of thirty-two pages and a coloured plate.
