Excerpt from The Bacteriology of the Eye Smcs this work appeared in German in 1907 certain parts of the text have been extended by Professor Axenfeld, and the references to a number of later publications included. Although the whole of the literature for 1907 has not been analyzed and included in the lists, all the recent work of importance. Or which modifies in any way views previously held, has been incorporated in the text. The aim of the translator has been to keep as close to the original as possible; the carrying out of this aim has been facilitated by the kindness of the author in looking over the proofs. The nomenclature used throughout is that authorized by the College of Physicians of London, and where that standard failed - for example, in the name of an organism - the name used by the first writer on the subject has been used in all cases where that could be determined. The greatest care has been exercised to have the references exact. Regarding many foreign names of persons, it will be noted that the German spelling of Russian and other words has been followed. Excerpt from The Pathology of the Eye, Vol. 1: Histology; Part I His volume includes the Pathological Histology of the Lids, Conjunctiva, Cornea, Sclerotic, Iris and Anterior Chamber, and Ciliary Body, together with the Bacteriology of the Conjunctiva. The Normal Histology of the parts is briefly related, no attempt being made to give an exhaustive description. Only those features which have a special bearing upon pathology are more fully dealt with; these are often inadequately discussed in the ordinary text books of normal histology. All the new illustrations are from photographs, which have not been touched up in any way. I am of the opinion that for elementary teaching good drawings are superior to photographic reproductions, much detail being obscured in reproduction by half-tone blocks. In an advanced work Of this kind, however, a good knowledge of normal and general pathological histology is taken for granted, and absolute fidelity is of prime importance. It is above all things essential that the text-book shall subserve, and not replace, work in the laboratory. I am greatly indebted to the recent books of Greeff and Ginsberg in preparing this volume. I have made a point, however, of going to original sources for information; but the arduous task of dis covering references has been much facilitated by these works. Neisser and Opitz cultivated their organs for two and three days only, and at the end of this time declared their organs sterile. In my cultivations at the end of three days an identical condition was determined. The cultures were sterile. There is, then, no doubt thrown upon the facts adduced by these observers. If, however, the organs be left for several days, a week, or two weeks, bacteria will appear on the culture media with such persistence and in such profusion and specific variety as to show that they come from the actual organs and are not introduced from without.
