Picking up where Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice left off, The Bad Miss Bennet takes readers on a wild Regency adventure with Lydia Wickham, née Bennet, who finds herself in dire need of a new husband. Lydia was never the most upstanding of the Bennet sisters, but who ever said that moral rectitude was fun? At least she bested her elder sisters and was the first to get married. She never could understand what all the fuss was about after she left Brighton with her gallant. It is a shame, though, that Mr. Wickham turned out to be a disappointing husband in so many aspects, the most notable being his early demise on the battlefields of Waterloo. And so Lydia, still not yet twenty and full of enterprising spirit, is in urgent need of a wealthy replacement. A lesser woman, without Lydia’s natural ability to flirt uproariously on the dance floor and cheat seamlessly at the card table, would swoon in the wake of a dashing highwayman, a corrupt banker, and even an amorous Prince Regent. But on the hunt for a marriage that will make her rich, there’s nothing that Lydia won’t turn her hand to. In the meantime, she has no qualms about imposing on her sister Elizabeth’s hospitality at Pemberley. After all, what is the point of having all that fine fortune if not to aid a poor, newly widowed younger sister? While Lydia rattles around the continent from Paris to Venice and to the home of the disgraced Princess of Wales in Italy and back again to Darbyshire, you, dear reader, will be greatly diverted by the new adventures of Jane Austen’s consummate and incorrigible anti-heroine, who never ceases to delight.

Elizabeth Bennet is her mother’s favorite daughter. She is not the prettiest or the liveliest, but she is the smartest. Mrs. Bennet, a woman not born as a gentlewoman, has always relied on Elizabeth for guidance, and Elizabeth has never failed her. Soon after Mr. Bingley comes to Hertfordshire, Georgiana Darcy arrives for a visit along with her cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, a man who has taken command of the local militia regiment. Georgiana, a shy young woman, becomes fast friends with Elizabeth, who influences her to shed her shyness for confidence. Mr. Darcy is drawn to Hertfordshire after learning of the recent addition of one George Wickham, his personal nemesis, to the militia regiment. Slightly mollified by his cousin’s assurances of Wickham's good behavior, Darcy turns his attention to the local society, and his focus is soon drawn to Elizabeth and her playful charms. But with Wickham still lurking in the background, Darcy can ill afford to allow himself to be distracted, for he knows exactly what sort of mischief his childhood friend is capable of pursuing.

Mr. Darcy is the steward of a grand estate. Elizabeth Bennet is a lowly housemaid. It's P&P, but all the characters are servants below stairs All Elizabeth Bennet wants is to escape. The housemaid position in the refuge of Donwell Abbey seems to be the answer to all her prayers. She finds an immediate friend in fellow housemaid Jane Langley, and she respects the housekeeper, Mrs. Charlotte Lucas. Certainly, the steward, Mr. Darcy, is haughty and proper and thinks she’s not handsome enough to tempt anyone, but he’s easily avoided. Soon, however, Elizabeth must dodge the advances of the butler, Mr. Collins, who has determined making her his wife will greatly increase his happiness, and the jealousy of fellow housemaid Caroline Bingley. And if that weren’t bad enough, a dark man from her past lurks outside on the grounds, ready to destroy her new life. Mr. Wickham knows all her secrets, and he can crush her if so decides. Dear reader, this variation places all the characters we know and love as servants in Donwell Abbey—yes, Mr. Knightley’s Donwell Abbey. This timeline takes place after the events in Emma and features the happily married couple and a cantankerous Mr. Woodhouse. I wanted everyone to read it, so I did my very best to keep it clean. And I mostly succeeded (mostly, mostly, but you know me, so there are some innuendos…), however I could not help but write a bonus steamy wedding night scene at the very end of the book for my spice-loving JAFF aficionados! Enjoy!

Pride and Prejudice is the most popular Jane Austen novel and has inspired millions of readers worldwide. More than hundred years after its first publication Mary Steele MacKaye - wife of the famous actor James Steele MacKaye - adapted the love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy to stage. She created a play that fascinates the audiences as much as the novel does its readers. Reprint of the original edition from 1922.
