This is a concise and user–friendly guide to the Balinese language Everyday Balinese is targeted to anyone who wishes to learn to speak colloquial Balinese. There are 23 lessons in the book, each with a dialogue that centers around the Balinese daily life. These realistic beginner Balinese dialogues are a great way to learn Balinese as it is really spoken. The dialogue is presented twice: The first version representing the lumrah or common Balinese; the second the alus or refined Balinese. Both versions are exactly the same grammatically; the difference lies in the word choice. Lumrah or common words are used by participants of equal social status in a conversation, and it reflects intimacy and informality among the users. Alus or refined words are associated with distancing and formality among users in a conversation. Each lesson contains a section on the grammar an word function, as well as a list of words in both the lumrah and alus forms, followed by their Indonesian and English equivalents. Each lesson ends with a section on sentence construction—how to use the structures taught to make simple sentences. The book has a pronunciation guide at the front, and a section or greeting, ordinal numbers and a handy dictionary at the end. The dictionary is arranged alphabetically by Balinese, followed by their Indonesian and English equivalents.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the practice of kekawin composition in Bali. Based on field research and a diverse range of palm leaf texts, it explores Balinese perceptions of kekawin composition and demonstrates the nexus between religion and the writing of these poems. Like kekawin from ancient Java, Balinese kekawin have been conceived as a mystical means of unification with divinity, as temples of language. In the first part of the book Bali is shown to be a society of religious literacy, and alphabet magic and the religious beliefs that underpin literary activity are examined. The second part explores Balinese conceptions of the practice of kekawin composition as literary yoga. Both the priestly identity of poets and the act of composing as a religious ritual are considered. The final section investigates the craft of composition through texts that concern prosody, poetics and orthography: the Canda, the Bhasaprana and the Swarawyanjana.

With beautiful illustrations done in the traditional Balinese style, this multicultural children's book celebrates an important Balinese festival. The Galungan festival in Bali marks the victory of dharma (order) over adharma (disorder). It is celebrated by the Balinese Hindus, who believe that during these ten days of prayers, offerings, and feasting, their revered ancestors return to their former homes to be welcomed and entertained. Using this entrancing setting, Swiss illustrator and painter Elisabeth Waldmeier relates the exhilarating festival of the fun-loving Balinese people through the eyes of a former child dancer, Sadri, who descends to his previous home to participate in the annual rapturous village celebrations. A delightful story accompanying enchanting and detailed illustrations, this book will captivate both children and adults alike.

Published exactly fifty years after Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead's Balinese Character (which still stands as the standard reference on Balinese personality and culture), this new study of the Balinese people -- a collaboration between a Western psychiatrist with wide experience ofBalinese culture and mental health and a Western-trained Balinese psychiatrist steeped in the local culture -- is unable to support the majority of Bateson and Mead's interpretations and conclusions and finds their basic assumptions inherently flawed. The study concludes that their book presents aninaccurate and misleading characterization of the Balinese as they were fifty years ago. In addition to this critique, the authors present their alternative formulations of psychosocial aspects of Balinese culture, their aim being to establish a more correct and valid portrayal of the life of the Balinese.
