The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in the English language. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's military and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. The Ballad of the White Horse is one of the last great epic poems in the English language. On the one hand it describes King Alfredಙs battle against the Danes in 878. On the other hand it is a timeless allegory about the ongoing battle between Christianity and the forces of nihilistic heathenism. Filled with colorful characters, thrilling battles and mystical visions, it is as lively as it is profound. Chesterton incorporates brilliant imagination, atmosphere, moral concern, chronological continuity, wisdom and fancy. He makes his stanzas reverberate with sound, and hurries his readers into the heart of the battle. This deluxe volume is the definitive edition of the poem. It exactly reproduces the 1928 edition with Robert Austinಙs beautiful woodcuts, and includes a thorough introduction and wonderful endnotes by Sister Bernadette Sheridan, from her 60 years researching the poem. Illustrated.

Gilbert K. Chesterton has kept his finest energies for fashioning the verses and symbolism of this ballad-epic — the story of King Alfred and the Danes. The London Nation said of the book: "We are certainly inclined to prophesy that 'The Ballad of the White Horse' will live very much longer than any other of Mr. Chesterton's writings. It is the best and most important thing he has done."

A rousing ballad based on the true story of legendary Saxon king Alfred the Great In the dark times before a unified England, warring tribes roved and sparred for territory across the British Isles. The Ballad of the White Horse records the deeds and military accomplishments of Alfred the Great as he defeats the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun. Published in 1911, this poem follows the battle—from the gathering of the chiefs to the last war cry—with a care to rhythm, sound, and language that makes it a magnificent work of art as well as a vital piece of English history. A significant influence on the structure of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, The Ballad of the White Horse transforms the thrilling exploits of a courageous leader into an inspirational Christian allegory. Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by GK Chesterton on the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, published in 1911. Written in ballad form, the work has been described as one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in The Language English. The poem tells how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun with the help of the Virgin Mary. The poem consists of 2,684 lines of verse in English. They are divided into stanzas, which generally consist of 4 to 6 lines each. The poem is based on the form of the ballad's stanza, although the poem often departs significantly from it. Metric foot types are used more or less freely, although there is often a basic repeat on one line. The rhyme scheme varies, often it is ABCB or ABCCCB.Chesterton begins his work with a note (in prose) stating that the poem is not historical. He says he has chosen to place the Battle of Ethandune site in the Valley of the White Horse, despite a lack of concrete evidence for this location (many scholars now believe it was probably fought in Edington, Wiltshire). He says he has chosen to include legends about Alfred, even if they are historically unlikely.
