This book traces the development of China’s banking system through the first 25 years of China’s socialist market economy up to the present. It examines how China’s leaders have chosen their own path for reforming and regulating the banking sector and shows how this approach has differed significantly from the neoliberal approach promoted by the West. The book demonstrates the effectiveness of the Chinese approach, contrasting China’s relative success in weathering the Asian financial crisis with the huge disruption experienced by other East and Southeast Asian nations which had followed the neoliberal model much more closely. The book explains how China’s officials were able to resist the persistent efforts of foreign financial institutions to gain control of China’s financial sector, particularly around the time of China’s entry to the World Trade Organization. It argues that China’s increasing influence in international financial institutions after the global financial crisis can help mitigate the risk of future financial crises and promote global financial stability.

Hong Kong is a small city with a big reputation. As mainland China has become an 'economic powerhouse' Hong Kong has taken a route of development of its own, flourishing as an entrepot and a centre of commerce and finance for Chinese business, then as an industrial city and subsequently a regional and international financial centre. This volume examines the developmental history of Hong Kong, focusing on its rise to the status of a Chinese global city in the world economy. Chiu and Lui's analysis is distinct in its perspective of the development as an integrated process involving economic, political and social dimensions, and as such this insightful and original book will be a core text on Hong Kong society for students.

Banking supervision and regulation by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) remain strong. This assessment confirms the 2014 Basel Core Principles assessment that the HKMA achieves a high level of compliance with the BCPs. The Basel III framework (and related guidance) and domestic and cross-border cooperation arrangements are firmly in place. The HKMA actively contributes to the development and implementation of relevant international standards. Updating their risk based supervisory approach helped the HKMA optimize supervisory resources. The financial markets of Hong Kong have a reputation for volatility, but careful analysis of past behaviour reveals consistent trends and coherent actions. This study, first published in 1991, at a time of uncertainty before Hong Kong’s transfer to China in 1997, analyses each of the financial markets in the colony, and explains the activities of banks, deposit-taking companies, the stock exchange, and markets in capital, gold, futures, unit trusts, and foreign exchange. Examining these in terms of structure, regulation and in competition, it constitutes not just a description but a thorough analysis of the characteristic dynamics of each market.

The Central Bank And The Financial System written by C. Goodhart and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-03-06 with Business & Economics categories.
Although the current day-to-day operations of Central Banks are subject to continuous comment and frequent criticism, their structural role within the economic system as a whole is generally accepted without much question and despite several attempts to challenge the value of the institution made by economists in recent decades. Professor C.A.E. Goodhart is ideally positioned to assess the role of the Central Bank being equally familiar with the theoretical arguments and with the actual working of central banks. Part 1 analyses the general purposes and functions of the Central Bank within the financial system and their evolution over time, Part 2 concentrates on the current objectives and operations of Central Banks, the maintenance of price stability in particular, and Part 3 analyses the broader issues of financial regulation. This book, providing a thorough and clear discussion of the questions connected with the role of the Central Bank in a modern financial system, will prove indispensable for students, academics and practitioners.
