This book describes the important ideas in a common conceptual framework. While the approach is statistical, the emphasis is on concepts rather than mathematics. Many examples are given, with a liberal use of color graphics. It should be a valuable resource for statisticians and anyone interested in data mining in science or industry.

This thoroughly revised and expanded third edition is a practical guide to data analysis using the bootstrap, cross-validation, and permutation tests. Only requiring minimal mathematics beyond algebra, it provides a table-free introduction to data analysis utilizing numerous exercises, practical data sets, and freely available statistical shareware. New to the third edition are additional program listings and screen shots of C++, CART, Blossom, Box Sampler (an Excel add-in), EViews, MATLAB, R, Resampling Stats, SAS macros, S-Plus, Stata, or StatXact, which accompany each resampling procedure. A glossary and solutions to selected exercises have also been added. With its accessible style and intuitive topic development, the book is an excellent basic resource for the power, simplicity, and versatility of resampling methods. It is an essential resource for statisticians, biostatisticians, statistical consultants, students, and research professionals in the biological, physical, and social sciences, engineering, and technology.

Over the last few decades, important progresses in the methods of sampling have been achieved. This book draws up an inventory of new methods that can be useful for selecting samples. Forty-six sampling methods are described in the framework of general theory. The algorithms are described rigorously, which allows implementing directly the described methods. This book is aimed at experienced statisticians who are familiar with the theory of survey sampling.

This edition contains a large number of additions and corrections scattered throughout the text, including the incorporation of a new chapter on state-space models. The companion diskette for the IBM PC has expanded into the software package ITSM: An Interactive Time Series Modelling Package for the PC, which includes a manual and can be ordered from Springer-Verlag. * We are indebted to many readers who have used the book and programs and made suggestions for improvements. Unfortunately there is not enough space to acknowledge all who have contributed in this way; however, special mention must be made of our prize-winning fault-finders, Sid Resnick and F. Pukelsheim. Special mention should also be made of Anthony Brockwell, whose advice and support on computing matters was invaluable in the preparation of the new diskettes. We have been fortunate to work on the new edition in the excellent environments provided by the University of Melbourne and Colorado State University. We thank Duane Boes particularly for his support and encouragement throughout, and the Australian Research Council and National Science Foundation for their support of research related to the new material. We are also indebted to Springer-Verlag for their constant support and assistance in preparing the second edition. Fort Collins, Colorado P. J. BROCKWELL November, 1990 R. A. Introduction To Rare Event Simulation written by James Bucklew and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Mathematics categories.

This book is an attempt to present a unified theory of rare event simulation and the variance reduction technique known as importance sampling from the point of view of the probabilistic theory of large deviations. This framework allows us to view a vast assortment of simulation problems from a single unified perspective. It gives a great deal of insight into the fundamental nature of rare event simulation. Unfortunately, this area has a reputation among simulation practitioners of requiring a great deal of technical and probabilistic expertise. In this text, I have tried to keep the mathematical preliminaries to a minimum; the only prerequisite is a single large deviation theorem dealing with sequences of Rd valued random variables. (This theorem and a proof are given in the text.) Large deviation theory is a burgeoning area of probability theory and many of the results in it can be applied to simulation problems. Rather than try to be as complete as possible in the exposition of all possible aspects of the available theory, I have tried to concentrate on demonstrating the methodology and the principal ideas in a fairly simple setting.
