Although its perfect mastery involves a thorough knowledge of optics and considerable acquaintance with mathematical formulae it is not so much a science in itself as a servant of all the sciences. There is hardly a science, profession, or trade to which it cannot in some way contribute by enlarging our senses to perceive the unseen, or by assisting our powers of observation to resolve the seen with an understanding of its uses. It is not what is seen, but what is observed, that is of value; and a very elementary use of the instrument undoubtedly increases the power of observation, thus serving a use by culti vating the powers of the observer in his other walks of life.
