Excerpt from The Beginner's History of Our Country In the first place, unlike some primary histories in common use, this is not an 'abridgment of a larger history. To attempt, within the narrow limits of a primary textbook, to present all of the events of our national life that are commonly considered impor tant from the adult's standpoint, would be to reduce the narrative to little more than a catalogue of names and dates. Moreover, some events and movements in our country's history are absolutely beyond the comprehension of an immature mind. To require the young pupil to memorize statements upon such subjects is nothing short of a pedagogical crime. Excerpt from Makers of American History: A Beginner's Book in the History of Our Country This little book is an effort to sketch the lives of some of the makers of American history in such a way as to present the strong points of their characters, and at the same time to narrate the main events in our history. It is believed that the book has a place in the schools in that it may be used in at least three different ways as a primary history, as a supplement to a more formal school history, and as a supplementary reader. Excerpt from Our Country's Story: An Elementary History of the United States This book aims not at telling stories about the United States, but at giving a short, simple, connected account of our country from its discovery to the present day. Mindful of the pleasure that children take in knowing "why," and of their unfailing interest in biography, I have tried, as far as the limits of the book would permit, to note reasons as well as deeds; and, while avoiding everything of the nature of a biographical sketch, I have sought to arouse and encourage a feeling of friendly familiarity with the heroes of our nation. Though an introductory history must necessarily be limited in size, it is believed that there can be gained from this volume a definite knowledge of the main events in the history of our land, some idea of the causes of those events, and an acquaintance, sympathetic though slight, with the men who stood behind the events; and that the book will thus serve as an introduction to a later and more extended study of the growth and development of our country. Acknowledgment is due to General James Grant Wilson, the Lenox Library, Messrs. S. P. Avery, Jr., Walter Bailey Ellis, George A. Clough, Grover Flint, Charles Scribner's Sons, and The Century Company, for permission to reproduce a number of illustrations in this book. Excerpt from History of Our Country: A d104-Book for Schools This "History of Our Country" has been prepared in the belief that there is need of a text-book on the history of the United States which would present fairly and impartially all sections of the Union. The authors have endeavored to divest the narrative of all bias for or against the North or the South, the East or the West. The strife for sectional or partisan supremacy has often transcended the bounds of true patriotism, but it is believed that such strife has been inevitable, and that in the long run it has made our country stronger and richer in the nobler elements of national life. Love of country is greater than the love of party, and loyalty to the state is a permanent and indestructible element in loyalty to the nation. Our country is "an indestructible union of indestructible states." Our history should be so taught that the next generation will cherish the patriotism which conserves the rights of the states, and honor the patriotism which guards the supremacy of the Federal Union. If this book shall prove to be helpful to the great army of earnest and faithful teachers in making the story of our country's life, growth, and progress more real and interesting to their pupils, the hope of the authors will be amply fulfilled. Excerpt from First Lessons in American History In this text I have told the story of America as I think it ought to be presented to beginners. Since children are always interested in the lives of the great, I have treated the subject on its biographical side. The story centers around the men who have been leaders in American life. But the book is more than a mere series of bio graphies; it is in a true sense a history of our country's growth. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
