Fiction. Poetry. Co-produced by Bamboo Ridge Press and Hawai'i Public Radio, Aloha Shorts brought some of Hawai'i's finest writers, actors, and musicians together each week for a half-hour radio program celebrating local literature. THE BEST OF ALOHA SHORTS contains poems and stories drawn from the pages of Bamboo Ridge that are not only excellent in themselves but also outstanding in performance. In addition to over thirty selections that provide a generous sample of the best of Hawai'i literature, this collection features a history and behind-the-scenes account of Aloha Shorts, and personal essays by some of the writers, actors, musicians, sponsors, and the host. An online link, www.bestofalohashorts.com, also provides readers with recordings of every piece's broadcast performance. The result is an introduction to life in the islands past and present, an anthology of some of the finest writing that Bamboo Ridge has published, a valuable resource for teachers who want their students to read and hear fine writing, and a souvenir of the much loved show that each week shared the spirit of Hawai'i.

Beautifully illustrated with more than 700 images, The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands tells the colourful stories behind the marvellous Hawaiian shirts: as cultural icons, evocative of the mystery and the allure of the Islands; as collectibles, valued by professional collectors and by the millions of tourists who still cherish the shirts hanging in their wardrobes; and as a lifestyle - casual, relaxed and fun. Drawing from hundreds of interviews, newspaper and magazine archives, and personal memorabilia, the author evokes the world of the designers, seamstresses, manufacturers and retailers of the Golden Age of the Aloha shirt (from the 1930s to the end of the 1950s), who created the industry and nurtured it from its single-sewing-machine shop beginnings to an enterprise of international scope and importance. Here are the fun-loving 1960s; interviews with collectors who preserve these shirts as fine works of art; and insights into the roles of coconut buttons, matched pockets, woven labels and exotic fabrics in the evolution of the Aloha shirt.

Shall We Dance is a short story written after two characters from Dive into You triggered the author's curiosity. From Dive into You : Doug grabbed his beer bottle and started to the corner booth Jonathan and his girl had staked out. Halfway there he noticed a sultry couple on the tiny square of a dance floor. For just a moment the intensity of emotions rolling off them in waves stopped him short. What's not to love about a bar called the Surf's Up Saloon? Success in the courtroom comes easily for J.P. Hartley, but not so much in his love life. Tired of superficial pretty faces, after a bitter loss in court all he wants is to unwind with his best friend and colleague Kimberly Anderson. That is, until a snazzy blonde forces him to face what—or who—has always been right in front of him. More From the Author What's a flirt? I think of them as episodes of a weekly TV show. Same familiar location and lead actor with guest stars, and of course cameo appearances of the Aloha cast. These short story Flirts have been so much fun to write. I hope you enjoy seeing the main characters from the series pop in from time to time as much as I do. It's always fun to see a snippet of their lives between books. If you haven't read the rest of the Aloha Series, you're in for a treat. Full length novels about active duty and former navy men and the women and family they love and care about. Some have a little humor, others a little mystery, but all have a lot of heart. Mostly set in Kona around the Big Island Dive shop there's plenty of fun in the sun, so pour yourself a cool drink, put up your feet and enjoy the bestselling Aloha contemporary romance series. Galaxy Science Fiction was an American digest-size science fiction magazine, published from 1950 to 1980. It was founded by an Italian company, World Editions, which was looking to break into the American market. World Editions hired as editor H. L. Gold, who rapidly made Galaxy the leading science fiction (sf) magazine of its time, focusing on stories about social issues rather than technology. Gold published many notable stories during his tenure, including Ray Bradbury's "The Fireman", later expanded as Fahrenheit 451; Robert A. Heinlein's The Puppet Masters; and Alfred Bester's The Demolished Man. In 1952, the magazine was acquired by Robert Guinn, its printer. By the late 1950s, Frederik Pohl was helping Gold with most aspects of the magazine's production. When Gold's health worsened, Pohl took over as editor, starting officially at the end of 1961, though he had been doing the majority of the production work for some time. Under Pohl Galaxy had continued success, regularly publishing fiction by writers such as Cordwainer Smith, Jack Vance, Harlan Ellison, and Robert Silverberg. However, Pohl never won the annual Hugo Award for his stewardship of Galaxy, winning three Hugos instead for its sister magazine, If. In 1969 Guinn sold Galaxy to Universal Publishing and Distribution Corporation (UPD) and Pohl resigned, to be replaced by Ejler Jakobsson. Under Jakobsson the magazine declined in quality. It recovered under James Baen, who took over in mid-1974, but when he left at the end of 1977 the deterioration resumed, and there were financial problems—writers were not paid on time and the schedule became erratic. By the end of the 1970s the gaps between issues were lengthening, and the title was finally sold to Galileo publisher Vincent McCaffrey, who brought out only a single issue in 1980. A brief revival as a semi-professional magazine followed in 1994, edited by H. L. Gold's son, E. J. Gold; this lasted for eight bimonthly issues. At its peak, Galaxy greatly influenced the science fiction field. It was regarded as one of the leading sf magazines almost from the start, and its influence did not wane until Pohl's departure in 1969. Gold brought a "sophisticated intellectual subtlety" to magazine science fiction according to Pohl, who added that "after Galaxy it was impossible to go on being naive." SF historian David Kyle agrees, commenting that "of all the editors in and out of the post-war scene, the most influential beyond any doubt was H. L. Gold". Kyle suggests that the new direction Gold set "inevitably" led to the experimental New Wave, the defining science fiction literary movement of the 1960s.

Drawn to a land of lava, ice, and sea - three previous hockey teammates leave dreary Detroit and buy historic La`Ohana Inn in sunny Kona. As temperate and as fierce as Hawaii's nature, this accountant, teacher, and physician become indispensable to neighbors and friends who are intent on sharing Aloha. At sunset Catherine Kievers drives the beautiful and desolate sea plain to Pu'uhonau O Honaunau searching for Livia Hinman, whose aunt died that morning in Indiana. Long before dawn, Cate recognized this day as a day of sorrow. Both women have witnessed a rainbow on opposite shores of The Big Island. Now facing moonlit totems and looming Pacific, Cate prepares to phone Margaret Brown and informs her of a futile search. Thanksgiving and Christmas come a bit bleak, until neighbor Tom Smith stops by and asks if La`Ohana Inn will sponsor weekly Keiki Pony Rides. He and partner Tim Boki run nearby Queens' Stables, and they add plenty of spice and angst to the women's lives. Elderly Chakra Kuhanamana falls on the highway near the inn's mailbox, and Margaret earns the nickname 'The Good Doctor' after treating the kupuna and her brother Aye Noelani. This interesting couple sponsors an old-fashioned hukilau, and they are invited to move back to the Caretaker's Cottage. Pele and Poliahu take notice. Veterinarian Richard Header becomes The Good Doctor's doctor and the island's most elusive pedophile. Hilo's mysterious Ma Loa Hakkalani appears and lends plenty of intrigue and plenty of trouble. Hockey buddies and an old friend visit and find it hard to leave. Then something truly amazing happens, and the story culminates with a double rainbow. Steeled by experience three individuals are ready to become kahuna.
