The Right Not To Remain Silent written by Jack Stern and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Philosophy categories.

A lifetime of hard-won wisdom and insight into the human heart is contained in this collection of eighty impassioned essays on ethical and spiritual issues ranging from racial injustice and the abuses of power to the legacy of the Holocaust, from the evolving relationship between American Jewry and Israel to raising morally sensitive children, from the mystery of death to the meaning of God in the modern world. If there is a single motif dominating this treasury of rabbinic wisdom, it is the need for ethical accountability on the part of both individuals and institutions. Each of these sermons faces life's dilemmas squarely with courage and a deep understanding of the complexities of human nature. They do not offer facile answers to difficult questions nor are they ever self-righteous but rather thoughtful, reflective, sensitive, often funny, intensely Jewish and deeply human, deriving their profound insights from Jewish tradition and the joys and sufferings of the author's own life. The best sermon is a reflection of wisdom forged by experience and infused with ancient truths. The best sermon is a well-lived life.

Jewish Preaching written by Louis Jacobs and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Religion categories.

Rabbi Jacobs, with sixty years' experience of pulpit work to his credit, provides a number of homilies for each weekly portion of the modern sermon and for the chapters of Ethics of the Fathers. The text for the modern sermon is usually the sidra, the weekly portion, or, in the summer months the Talmudic book known universally as Ethics of the Fathers. Among the sermonic themes are contemporary problems, the religious and ethical needs of the individual, and, of course, the impact of the Holocaust and the State of Israel.

Your Voice Like A Ram S Horn written by Marc Saperstein and has been published by Hebrew Union College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-01 with Religion categories.

The eighteen studies in this book continue the exploration of the Jewish sermon Saperstein began in his groundbreaking Jewish Preaching 1200-1800. His new research further illustrates the importance of this genre, largely ignored by modern scholarship, as an indispensible resource for understanding Jewish history, spirituality, and thought from the High Middle Ages to the beginning of the Emancipation in Europe. Saperstein's thematic studies explore the most important occasions for traditional rabbinic preaching: the Days of Awe and the Passover season. Two studies focus on the homiletical exegesis of classical Jewish texts, and two deal with the historical interaction of Christians and Jews. Saperstein discusses the diffusion of philosophical ideas through homiletics and identifies central conceptual issues presented in the Italian Jewish pulpit. Other essays include a critical analysis of the work of Saul Levi Morteira of Amsterdam, an examination of sermons in eighteenth-century Prague for indications of a traditional community in crisis, and homiletical evidence for a developing sense of patriotic identification with the state, even before Emancipation changed the legal status of the Jews. Saperstein also presents newly discovered sermonic texts in order to explore a full panoply of issues relating to historical context and genre. All are published for the first time with his annotated translation accompanying the Hebrew original. Included are a Guide for Preachers, sermons on repentance and on the Binding of Isaac, and three eulogies, the last a fascinating memorialization of the antisemitic empress Maria Theresa.

In 1995 the London Times launched a competition for the best sermons in the United Kingdom. The competition has been broadened this year to include sermons from the Jewish community.
