Thank you for your interest in Okinawan kobudo. As you may already know, Okinawan kobudo comes mostly from farmer and fishermen tools such as the hoe, sickles, bo staff and the handle from stone grain mills (tonfa) and the nunchaku from the skin of the hemp plant to make clothes or from a hand thrasher to separate soybeans from their shell. Every country, including your country, has or had very similar farming and fishermen tools. The shape may be different but you can perhaps use your own country's tools for practice. You don't necessarily need to have farming tools from Okinawa, and you can still practice kobudo. That is the most strong point of kobudo. Now, don't make too hard of a schedule to learn, you must enjoy practicing. If you study and practice well with the weapons, then your movement will be very natural and your body will become one with the tools (weapons) and the movement. I hope you have enjoyed this book. As long as you don't hit yourself with your own weapons, you can have a lot of fun!

This work clearly defines and catalogues the fifty historical hand-held weapons that were used in Okinawa Prefecture and the Ryukyu Islands from the dawn of its history. It show the stages of development and introduction of these weapons to the islands and how they affected the culture through the ages. The 'standard five' popular weapons of the modern era (bo, sai, tonfa, nunchaku & kama) are described in detail with many scale drawings, but surprisingly, it clearly shows the influence of bladed weapons, such as the curved sword. Firearms also made a huge contribution to Ryukyuan weapon development, so these are also introduced in their historical context. Most surprising is the contextual detail of the historic eras, such as the affects of the Satsuma Invasion of the Ryukyu Islands in 1609 & the dissolution of the monarchy in 1879. Contrary to popular myth, between these years Okinawans did not adopt farmers tools for self protection, for quite a different history is revealed herein.

Japan’s Ryukyu archipelago was the birthplace of two methods of self-defense now practiced worldwide: Okinawan Karate and Ryukyu Kobujutsu, known as Okinawan Kobudo. Kobudo is the study of weapons adapted from the tools of farming and fishing. Okinawan Kobudo reveals, for the first time through print and photographs, the rich history and techniques of this most prestigious martial art known worldwide as Matayoshi. Andrea Guarelli traces the history of Matayoshi Kobudo, explores the background of each weapon, and demonstrates the form and technique of practice through rare photos, many of which the author took while a student of Shinpo Matayoshi Sensei (1921–1997). Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. A first in the field of Okinawan Te. This work contains incredibly revealing material on this until now semi-secret Okinawan martial art called te! It is another fascinating and mind-opening book from the best-selling author, Mark D Bishop, who is considered to be the most authoritative writer on Okinawan martial arts. Mark D Bishop spent nearly two decades living and researching in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, during the important years of change in the 1970s and 1980s. This work is the third of his trilogy following on from 'Okinawan Karate, Teachers, Styles & Secret Techniques' and 'Okinawan Weaponry, Hidden Methods, Ancient Myths of Kobudo & Te'. Containing many, until now, unrevealed techniques for health and self defence (with and without weapons), it is a must-read for all serious martial artists. There is history, training methods, techniques, how to do, how to teach and, above all, how to avoid or counter potentially harmful conflict through advanced application; how to not only survive, but thrive.

"This book is as vital to every serious martial artist as zen is profound." An intriguing and detailed work on the history of Okinawan martial arts as they relate to the physical & metaphysical aspects of zen training. Every martial artist should read and digest the detailed contents, because the work is more than an historic journey tracing the roots of Okinawan te & kobudo from their beginnings in the 7th-century AD through to the introduction of karate into the modern era, for it teaches, explains and demonstrates the very core, the essence, of all such esoteric arts and the real reasons for training and teaching them.

Saijutsu written by Katsumi Murakami and has been published by Tuttle Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-10-01 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Saijutsu: Traditional Okinawon Weapon Art is a presentation by kobujutsu master Katsumi Murakami of the powerful and subtle Okinawan art of the sai. In this succinct and authoritative martial arts manual, the art of wielding the sai, twin forked weapons-sometimes called iron rulers or truncheons-that enable the user to disarm and neutralize a more heavily armed opponent, is set out in step-by-step detail, with clear photographs of every move of each kata, from the basic training forms to the more complex classical kata. The core of the art of saijutsu is the union of weapon and wielder- sai become extensions of the hand itself. Practicing these techniques trains the wrist and arm, and indeed the whole body, in a way which increases the power, speed, and precision even of empty-handed strikes. This volume includes legends of the saijutsu masters BushiTawada and Bushi Matsumura of the author's lineage, discussion of saijutsu technique versus sword, and the following kata: Saijutsu Kihongata lchi Saijutsu Kihongata Ni Saijutsu Kihongata San Tawada no Sai Ichi Matsumura no Sai
