As a young boy growing up in Michigan, Wyland often dreamed of swimming in the ocean. He also had a passion for art, and he was rarely found without a pencil or brush in his hand. His talent was recognized at an early age, and his teachers encouraged him throughout school to concentrate on his artwork. Meanwhile he began to learn more about endangered sea creatures all over the world, and he dreamed of someday making a difference. As he grew older, Wyland's artistic vision started to take shape. He decided that the best way to bring attention to the marine animals he cared about saving was through his art. He adopted a mission: to inspire people to care more about our oceans and the life within them. When Wyland started to outgrow the canvases he was using to paint whales, he decided to use the sides of buildings to really capture their magnificence. In 1981, he created his first Whaling Wall in Laguna Beach, California. He promised himself that he would paint 100 walls around the world. As of 2003, Wyland has painted 90 walls across the globe.
