EDWIN CHARLES TUBB is one of the most popular and prolific British writers of science fiction. Born between World War I and II, he became an avid reader of the American pulp magazines, but the second World War thwarted his writing ambitions. Post-war he was in the vanguard of an emerging group of talented British writers. They included Brian Aldiss, Sydney J. Bounds, John Brunner, Ken Bulmer, John Christopher, John Russell Fearn, Philip E. High and John Wyndham, who collectively helped lay the foundations for British science fiction as it exists today. Tubb's first professional sale, a short story, was published in 1951, in the leading British science fiction magazine New Worlds, where he quickly became established as a star contributor. The first of his many novels appeared as a paperback original shortly thereafter, and he was soon featuring in all of the other British SF magazines, most notably Authentic Science Fiction, Nebula Science Fiction, and Science Fantasy. Over the next decade, Tubb also became established in the leading American SF magazines, selling outstanding stories to Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy, If, and Planet Stories. He also became established in the United States as a novelist, and is today best known as the creator of the long-running "Dumarest of Terra" series. Here then are hand-picked stories, the cream of the crop, making The Best Science Fiction of E.C. Tubb the publishing event of the year

They should have listened...A never before seen novel from master of the genre, E. C. Tubb!"His reputation for fast-moving and colourful SF writing is unmatched by anyone in Britain." Michael Moorcock All is well aboard the Ad Astra, exploratory spaceship. Commander Carl Maddox watches carefully for any signs of cabin fever or unrest, but the crew is occupied with their jobs and hard at work. The inaugural performance of an onboard play is commenced and all is going perfectly - until the audience's perceptions of the play take on a life of their own. "Turn back! Back! Back!" A warning - but from whom? Each spectator was given the message in a slightly different way, their subconsciousness tailoring it for maximum effect. As Commander Maddox, chief medical officer Dr. Claire Allard, and the rest of the crew try to solve the mystery of the mental hijacking, one of the scout ships is attacked by another mental warning - this time with dire consequences. They have failed to heed the warning, a move they would later dearly regret. The Ad Astra has discovered a bubble in space, a self-contained universe - one they are now trapped in. A strange sentient planet had been quarantined by a long-dead alien race. And for a very good reason ... it was a Destroyer of Worlds! E.C Tubb manages a large cast of characters while exploring one of the oldest stories in a new way - Man vs. that which seeks to destroy him. He appreciated that whilst technology may change, Man's nature remains the same and Pandora's Box spins a fascinating tale based on that most basic human emotion - greed!
