Excerpt from Best Stories to Tell to Children It is the belief of the publishers, here and in England, that some of the stories ought to be printed separately from these books on method, for the more ready ac cess of children themselves and those whose interest is of a wholly untechnical sort. This is the more de sirable because stories which are especially adapted to be told are equally charming for reading aloud or to one's self. The converse is not true: stories written to be read are rarely suitable for the story-teller's art until they have been skilfully adapted. In other words, those tales which can be and have been told with suc cess are in a sense the chosen few; they, of all the world's stories, are most charming to hear or to read. Excerpt from Library of the World's Best Mystery and Detective Stories You may readily judge that Sergy's heart was very accessible to love, and, in fact, you would have rarely found him free from one of those passions on which a man's life seems to depend; but the fortunate exaltation of his sensibility was in itself a defense against excess. What his ardent soul required was another equally ardent, with which it could associate and mingle itself; and al though he thought he saw it everywhere, he had not met with it till then. Excerpt from The Best British Short Stories of 1922 I do not suppose that a hundred years ago such a question could have Occurred to any one. Then all that a story was and could be was implied in the simple phrase: Tell me a story. We all know what that means. How many stories published today would stand this simple if final test of being told by word of mouth? I doubt whether fifty per cent would. Surely the universality of the printing press and the linotype machine have done something to alter the character of literature, just as the train and the telephone have done not a little to abolish polite correspondence. Most stories of today are to be read, not told. Hence great importance must be attached to the manner of writing; in some instances, the whole effect Of a modern tale is dependent on the manner of presentation. Henry James is, possibly, an extreme example. Has any one ever attempted to tell a tale in the Henry James man ner by word of mouth, even when the manner pretends to be conversational? I, for one, have yet to experience this pleasure, though I have listened to a good many able and experienced tale-tellers in my time. Now, there is a great connection between the manner or method of a writer and the matter upon which he works his manner or method. Henry James was not an accident. Life, as he found it, was full of trivialities and polite surfaces; and a great deal of ma'nner-style, if you like - is needful to give life and meaning to trivial things. Excerpt from Fifty Famous People: A Book of Short Stories One of the best things to be said of the stories in this volume is that, although they are not biographi cal, they are about real persons who actually lived and performed their parts in the great drama of the world's history. Some of these persons were more famous than others, yet all have left enduring footprints on the sands of time, and their names will not cease to be remembered. In each of the stories there is a basis of truth and an ethical lesson which cannot fail to have a wholesome influence; and each possesses elements of interest which, it is believed, will go far towards prov ing the fallibility of the doctrine that children find delight only in tales of the imaginative and unreal. The fact that there are a few more than fifty famous people mentioned in the volume may be credited to the author's to give good measure. Excerpt from Tales From Blackwood: Being the Most Famous Series of Stories Ever Published I found a few more of the same stamp at Brussels, and as I ascended the Rhine, I met here and there a stray levanter taking the waters at Ems, or wait ing for some one. Your levanter has always a friend coming to join him; but wherever I chanced upon them, they were always well dressed and well to-do, living at the best hotels of the place, and evidently denying themselves nothing that the locality afforded. Excerpt from Graded List of Stories for Reading Aloud The making of the above list is no attempt to compile a graded list of the world's best stories. It does not attempt to include every book which may be read aloud with pleasure and profit in the class rooms. It aims rather to give a list of some twenty or thirty books which will be found enjoyable to both teachers and pupils, and will leave the children with some idea of the best juvenile literature, and to give them stories which will leave behind in their minds a kind of fine and wholesome feeling for the whole day.
