This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ...the prophet's head like a rainbow. The angel of the Annunciation comes not alone, but with a cloud of baby angels in his train, swooping, birdlike, into the Virgin's bedchamber. The Satan of our Lord's temptation is "transformed into an angel of light," exultingly offering stones to the famished Saviour. Christ before Pilate, the Ecce Homo, and the Procession to Calvary are all strikingly original in treatment, leading at last to the Crucifixion, which is beyond all comparison the most remarkable and impressive picture of the subject ever painted. There are three distinct motives in the composition, each in turn the centre of many groups. At the right the unrepentant thief's cross lies flat upon the ground, and the victim i n toret to is stretching himself in position to be lashed upon it. The other thief has reached a later stage of torture, being already fastened to his cross, which is now pulled into an upright position by ropes. By these two groups we are made to see the painful process through which the divine sufferer has passed. His cross is now in place, and the Saviour's head is thrown into relief against a great disc of light. Towering above the scene, the central figure brings into unity the great throng about him. The decorations of S. Rocco are proof positive that Venice, with all her devotion to the pomps and vanities, could not altogether escape theology. Here is a systematic scheme of Christian dogma pictorially expressed, not so completely as in the Sistine Chapel, but in the same general way. The plan of redemption is outlined from the Fall of Man to the Ascension of the Saviour, and the Old and New Testaments are brought together in the significant parallels from the ..".

The Academy of Parish Clergy’s 2018 Top Five Reference Books for Parish Ministry Beauty and holiness are both highly significant subjects in the Bible. In this comprehensive study of Christian fine art David Lyle Jeffrey explores the relationship between beauty and holiness as he integrates aesthetic perspectives from the ancient Hebrew Scriptures through Augustine, Aquinas, and Kant down to contemporary philosophers of art. From the walls of the Roman catacombs to the paintings of Marc Chagall, visual art in the West has consistently drawn its most profound and generative inspiration from biblical narrative and imagery. Jeffrey guides readers through this artistic tradition from the second century to the twenty-first, astutely pointing out its relationship not only to the biblical sources but also to related expressions in liturgy and historical theology. Lavishly illustrated throughout with 146 masterworks, reproduced in full color, In the Beauty of Holiness is ideally suited to students of Christian fine art, to devotees of biblical studies, and to general readers wanting to better understand the story of Christian art through the centuries.

The Shadow Of Beauty written by S. Talmond Brown and has been published by Tate Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07 with Art categories.

Art is a spiritual ministry that must be studied, nurtured, and influenced by the church. Christian artists need to understand the weighty responsibilities of their calling, and the church must understand the importance of art as a divinely appointed ministry. In The Shadow of Beauty, S. Talmond Brown urges artists and church leaders to realize the need for a mission to reestablish the church's cultural authority and recognize art as a God-honored career. Brown includes works by such renowned artists as Leonardo da Vinci and William Blake, presenting biblical proof that all art forms—including paintings, sculptures, music, and literature—are an important means by which artists and non-artists alike can spread God's Word and should be developed to the fullest. Covering such subjects as biblical enigmas, the potential benefits and dangers of art, and the role of art in redeeming our culture, Brown poignantly recounts the church's aesthetic history, revealing the keys to discovering the truth hiding behind The Shadow of Beauty. Stephen Talmond Brown has published the most systematic approach to a truly Reformed Christian theory and practice of art attempted in decades. Equal parts devotional, aesthetic theory, church history, and reformed apologetics, The Shadow of Beauty rolls along with a spiritual rigor and elegance rare for our age. —Tony Norman, Columnist/Associate Editor, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

When Only the Truth Will Do Faced with real-life tests—whether to our reason or our reserves—we more easily doubt than believe, more quickly despair than trust. But often our tentativeness to stand on the Word of God is less a lack of courage and more a lack of knowledge. We know what we’ve heard; we know what we’ve been told. But what’s the truth? What does the Bible really say? What can we grab onto by faith and never let go? This book is an entire collection of biblical truth that deals with a specific area of life—a specific need, a specific topic, a specific place where questions have always seemed more prevalent than answers. But as each page attests, the Scripture will always provide a firm place to dig in and defend. Be sure of what’s true, and you’ll feel a lot more sure of the next step.
