Young evangelicals in Britain often find themselves at odds with an increasingly secular society, and yet the tradition persists and in some places flourishes. Sociological studies into the faith of this demographic group are rare, yet there is much to be explored as to how their faith functions and how it compares to other groups globally. Similarly, given the privilege evangelicals afford the biblical text, how young believers engage with the ancient Scriptures they understand to be "the word of God" is particularly significant. This work addresses that core question. How do young evangelicals make sense of the Bible today? Based on qualitative data gathered from three diverse evangelical churches it compares the reading priorities, ordinary hermeneutics, and theological concerns of young adults. Presenting age-related focus groups with challenging biblical narratives, the study compares strategies for negotiating the texts based on age, gender, and churchmanship. It provides a unique insight into the realities of Bible reading and the faith of "Generation Y" and gives food for thought not only to those with scholarly interests, but also those with a pastoral concern to shape and sustain the Christian faith of young adults in Britain and beyond.

Robert E. Webber has led worship workshops in every major city in the United States and Canada. Through his conversations and contacts with a network of emerging church leaders he calls the "younger evangelicals," Webber sees how this new generation and their style of leadership is bringing change and renewal to the evangelical church. These leaders, who include those young in spirit as well as young in age, have important insights to offer all generations faced with "doing church" in a rapidly changing postmodern culture. The Younger Evangelicals explores the characteristics of these emerging leaders and provides an outlet for their stories. Beginning with a brief overview of twentieth-century evangelicalism, Webber examines what is different about the twenty-first century younger evangelicals' way of thinking about faith and practicing church. He allows them-Ph.D.s and laypeople-to speak in their own words on issues such as communication, theology, apologetics, pastoral leadership, evangelism, worship, and spiritual formation. Thought provoking, energizing, and timely, The Younger Evangelicals is a landmark book for pastors and church leaders, culture watchers, ministry students, and worship leaders who want to prepare for and respond to the new evangelical awakening brought on by our changing cultural context.

In Inerrancy and the Spiritual Formation of Younger Evangelicals, readers are urged to pastorally consider their own spiritual responsibilities toward students by taking more seriously six representative critical discoveries that students tend to make during the course of their higher education. By doing this, it is hoped that leaders and teachers might become more sensitive to the reality that younger evangelicals are not generally "already" convinced of the Bible's inerrancy and may even be secretly and frantically searching for existentially workable bibliological alternatives. It behooves evangelical leaders as responsible shepherds of God's people to give their students the social and spiritual room they need to breathe by offering them acceptably orthodox alternatives for understanding the inspiration and authority of the Bible.

In Youth Ministry and Theology Shorthand, David Bailey explores the dialogue between practice and theological education through the lens of youth ministry. This qualitative study illuminates how youth ministers talk about their work amongst young people. Through the slowing down of the youth ministry process it is discovered that youth ministers speak in theological shorthand. Theological shorthand is a paradox: it is both meaningful--it fuels long-term sacrificial service amongst young people--and it is problematic, as it risks untethering youth ministry from the wider narrative of the Christian story. The book will appeal to youth ministers, clergy, academics, graduate and post-graduate students, but also informed volunteers involved in youth ministry. Through the discipline of practical theology, it correlates the voices of the youth ministers, a set of materials used to deepen faith, and contemporary expressions of sung worship. These are then brought into conversation and explored via different aspects of Trinitarian theology to deepen the theological grammar within contemporary youth ministry and to help develop theological literacy.

Named by Christianity Today as one of the twentyfive most influential preachers of the last fifty years, best-selling author Tony Campolo has spent decades calling on readers and audiences around the world to live their faith through committed activism. A tireless crusader for human rights and the eradication of world poverty, Campolo is a "Red Letter" Christian--he reminds us that when Jesus spoke, he spoke of social justice. But the Religious Right and social conservatives have hijacked His message in the name of Republican politics. They have corrupted the faith by ignoring the true message of Christ and focusing instead on narrow "wedge" issues to win political campaigns. In Letters to a Young Evangelical, Campolo calls on evangelicals of all ages to reject the false pieties of the Religious Right. With his trademark candor and wit, he offers sage advice to seekers who are trying to live their faith in a modern world that is politically polarized and predominantly secular. He is unafraid to touch on the hot-button topics that divide believers in America and around the world: abortion, gay rights, war, capital punishment, feminism, and the environment. An activist, a visionary, and a man of deep faith, Tony Campolo offers guidance not only for young evangelicals, but for seekers of all ages and faiths.

Description: In Inerrancy and the Spiritual Formation of Younger Evangelicals, readers are urged to pastorally consider their own spiritual responsibilities toward students by taking more seriously six representative critical discoveries that students tend to make during the course of their higher education. By doing this, it is hoped that leaders and teachers might become more sensitive to the reality that younger evangelicals are not generally ""already"" convinced of the Bible's inerrancy and may even be secretly and frantically searching for existentially workable bibliological alternatives. It behooves evangelical leaders as responsible shepherds of God's people to give their students the social and spiritual room they need to breathe by offering them acceptably orthodox alternatives for understanding the inspiration and authority of the Bible. Endorsements: ""Carlos Bovell has written a thoughtful book on the challenges, both intellectual and spiritual, faced by a new generation of evangelicals as they engage the question of inerrancy. While one possibility would be to simply abandon this doctrine, another course of action is preferable: to subject this important idea to critical scrutiny with the intention of reconstructing it for the contemporary setting. I believe that this is an imperative task and that Bovell's work deserves careful attention from those of us who continue to affirm this doctrine. We ignore these questions at our peril."" --John R. Franke, Professor of Theology, Biblical Seminary ""Here are the 'recognitions' of a young evangelical scholar whose spiritual formation was stifled, not to say arrested, because he had been led to believe that the only acceptably orthodox way was a belief in biblical inerrancy. The author argues that the dogma of inerrancy left him woefully unprepared for engagement with modernist and postmodern biblical scholarship and plunged him into a fundamental spiritual crisis. This book should be a welcome read for anyone who, like the author, can no longer make sense of the evangelical inerrancy credo."" --James H. Olthuis, Emeritus Professor of Philosophical Theology, Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto ""Bovell knows the evangelical world inside out, and speaks on behalf of younger evangelicals who cannot, or do not wish to, reconcile themselves to the doctrine of inerrancy. He calls biblical teachers to account, and campaigns for candour in facing up to the unsoundness of the doctrine. His argument is both scholarly and personally engaging, and should be read by students and tutors alike, especially those involved in ministerial training."" --Rev. Dr. Harriet A. Harris, University of Oxford, author of Fundamentalism and Evangelicals ""Carlos Bovell has exposed one of the guilty secrets of the Evangelical Tradition, that is, its ironic ability to provoke theological and spiritual rebellion in its own ranks. Those who want to arrest this tragic development should begin by reading this book and facing squarely the challenge it presents."" --William J. Abraham, Albert Cook Outler Professor of Wesley Studies, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University About the Contributor(s): Carlos R. Bovell is a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary and is studying history of philosophy at the Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto."

The Bible Made Impossible written by Christian Smith and has been published by Baker Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-01 with Religion categories.

Biblicism, an approach to the Bible common among some American evangelicals, emphasizes together the Bible's exclusive authority, infallibility, clarity, self-sufficiency, internal consistency, self-evident meaning, and universal applicability. Acclaimed sociologist Christian Smith argues that this approach is misguided and unable to live up to its own claims. If evangelical biblicism worked as its proponents say it should, there would not be the vast variety of interpretive differences that biblicists themselves reach when they actually read and interpret the Bible. Far from challenging the inspiration and authority of Scripture, Smith critiques a particular rendering of it, encouraging evangelicals to seek a more responsible, coherent, and defensible approach to biblical authority. This important book has generated lively discussion and debate. The paperback edition adds a new chapter responding to the conversation that the cloth edition has sparked.
