Despite the restrictions on their work and actions, the economists of the Soviet period produced a great deal of bold and important work. With the erosion of the old Stalinist controls, economists in the Soviet Union themselves became very interested in the history of their profession, not least in order to find authentic voices that might offer reinforcement or counterpoint to the policy analyses and recommendations with which policy makers in the transition countries are today being bombarded. This major new reference work pulls together many years of research in order to present a bio-bibliographic dictionary of Russian and Soviet economists, many of whom have previously had no coherent record compiled of their careers, achievements and wider significance. Through exploring this rich tradition of economic thought, we can go some way in understanding the role of economists in the functioning of the Soviet system, as well as bringing previously forgotten work to light, raising new questions, and providing a memorial to those who suffered as a result of the system. This hugely detailed and important new volume takes into account all the nuances of the story of Russian and Soviet economic thought, such as regional issues, the reform and transition to a market economy, and the economic output of non-economists. Featuring nearly 500 entries, and including a detailed contextual introduction, this landmark volume will be a vitally important reference work for all those with an interest in the history of economic thought, the history of economics and Russian and Soviet history more generally.

Glossary of Economics: Including Soviet Terminology focuses on semantic development in the field of economics. The book first offers information on the abbreviations used in economics and language indicators. These include the abbreviations for colloquial, feminine, masculine, neuter, plural, and indicators of the French and German languages. The manuscript then provides a basic table of economic terms in English with their French and Russian counterparts and an alphabetical tabulation of French and German economic terms. The text also elaborates on a Russian alphabetical and numerical index. A Russian to English tabulation of economic terminologies is also provided. The publication is a fine reference for economists and readers interested in the semantic development in economics.

Making It Count written by Arunabh Ghosh and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-11 with History categories.

"Among the biggest challenges facing leaders of the newly established People's Republic of China (PRC) was how much they did not know. In 1949, at the end of a long sequence of wars, the government of one of the largest states in the world committed to fundamentally re-engineering its society and economy via socialist planning while having almost no hard, reliable statistical data about their own country. This book is a history of attempts made to resolve this "crisis in counting." Drawing on a wealth of official, institutional, and private sources culled from China, India, and the United States, the author explores the choices made and the effects they engendered through a series of vivid encounters with political leaders, professional statisticians, academics, ordinary statistical workers, and even literary figures. Early reliance on Soviet-inspired methods of enumeration became increasingly untenable in China by the middle of the 1950s. A series of unprecedented and unexpected exchanges with Indian statisticians followed, as the Chinese sought to learn about the then exciting new technology of random sampling. These developments were, in turn, overtaken by the tumult of the Great Leap Forward (1958-1961), when both probabilistic and exhaustive methods were rejected and statistics was refashioned into an essentially ethnographic enterprise. The author argues that this history, usually narrowly described as a universal, if European history, cannot be understood without acknowledging Soviet and Indian influences which not only revises existing models of Cold War science but also globalizes the wider developments in the history of statistics and data. For historians of China and social science, and political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists studying modern China"--
