These days, it is difficult to believe that in the 1950s to 1980s, New Zealanders could travel to London, buy an old car or motorbike, and then drive or ride through Europe, the Middle East, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, most of the way back to Australia and New Zealand. These were the hey-days of the magic bus, and overland safaris in beaten-up old transit vans and trucks. Young New Zealanders have always had an incurable urge to travel and see the world, and chase the ghosts of their ancestors. The 'Big OE' has become part of New Zealand culture. The stories in this collection are snapshots of such travelers' experiences, about the cultural and environmental differences, adventure, in some cases daring, hardships, courage and determination, language, championship, humor, and having a good time. The stories span 65 years, but the emphasis is on the sixties and seventies. And they are all true. We hope you enjoy them.

Young New Zealanders have an incurable urge to travel and see that world which we hear so much about but from which we feel so separated. The 'big OE' has become part of New Zealand culture. It is an astonishing phenomenon that enriches our life in innumerable ways and most people look back on those experiences with rueful fondness. The Big OE is a collection of 37 varied and entertaining New Zealander's travel stories which are sure to trigger memories for those who have been and inspire those who want to go. These stories represent a wide range of OE experience spanning 50 years but with an emphasis on the 60s and 70s. They are not about museums, holy places or scenery but the sort of experience that create long-lasting memories. From the ubiquitous first stop of Earls Court in London and a variety of jobs to save money while there, these young travellers took Contiki tours around exotic North Africa, The Magic Bus to Greece or hitchhiked on their own itinerary. After two months, two years or more most headed for home. They followed the Marco Polo route to India, sailed through the Caribbean, hitchhiked back via Canada and America, or drove overland to South Africa. The stories recollected in The Big OE are as varied as the people who told them, for example: * Three Speed Cardigans - In the early 50's three young women cycle through Britain and bombed-out Germany causing quite a stir in their hand-knitted cardigans emblazoned with a kiwi and map of New Zealand. * Fly Spray and Hakas - Its amazing what you resort to when faced with a band of gypsies demanding money on a barren plateau in Turkey. See over. . . * Grossly Overloaded - Three punctures in succession prove an impossible challenge for a young Kiwi tour driver/leader behind the iron curtain in ''71. The tyres were not able to be fixed but the human exchanges with the men in uniform were memorable. Some are funny, some describe ordinary travel events, others frightening episodes as travellers got into trouble and yet others relate exciting adventures. All of the stories however illustrate some aspect of OE that will be recognised by other travellers. Photographs from personal albums enhance the stories and add another dimension to the nostalgia

Doing Museology Differently written by Duncan Grewcock and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-05 with Art categories.

One might believe that museum studies is a stable field of academic inquiry based on a set of familiar institutional forms and functions. But as institutions museums have never been stable or singular, and neither has the discipline of museum studies. Museum studies as a field of academic inquiry has received little critical attention. One result of this neglect has arguably been a lack of invention in museum studies; another is the distancing of academic museum studies from museum practice. Doing Museology Differently charts a different course. A critical‐creative reflection on academic practice, the book takes the form of a narrative account of museological fieldwork. A research story unfolds, challenging academic conventions at the level of its own presentation: the book combines critical museum visiting with an autobiographical voice. The identification of a previously underexplored interdisciplinary space leads the author to experiment with museum studies using contemporary developments in the theory and practice of human geography. The new approaches to museological research and representation that emerge from this unique inquiry challenge assumed institutional and intellectual boundaries and act as a call to further creative experimentation.

Starting in the early nineties, the flow of information became more fluid, and with this, managers and professionals started operating across borders, crossing different contexts in greater numbers than ever before. In this edited collection, contributors from around the world examine how context, culture and social relations of power all impact on how professionals interact with new structural and ideological frameworks. Issues such as regulation and law, policies, history, identities and inequalities are explored. The book covers a wide range of countries, including USA, China, Brazil, Ghana and Hungary, offering strong theoretical analyses, as well as practical implications. This book aims to help students and managers understand the career issues involved when they do business in other countries. It will appeal to students on human resource management or international business courses.
