Cell Surface Proteases provides a comprehensive overview of these important enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of a protein as it degrades to a simpler substance. In the 1990s, an explosion of new discoveries shed light on the role of cell surface proteases and extended it beyond degradation of extracellular matrix components to include its influence on growth factors, cell signaling, and other cellular events. This volume unites the scientific literature from across disciplines and teases out unified themes of interactions between cell surface proteases and interconnecting cell surface-related systems -- including integrins and other adhesion molecules. Scientists and students involved in developmental biology, cell biology and disease processes will find this an indispensable resource. * Provides an overview of the entire field of cell surface proteases in a single volume * Presents major issues and astonishing discoveries at the forefront of modern developmental biology and developmental medicine * A thematic volume in the longest-running forum for contemporary issues in developmental biology with over 30 years of coverage

obvious properties, its structure, composition, electrical properties, me chanical properties, and most particularly, its permeability properties. None of these properties are obviously associated with surface enzymes. What are the functions of the cell surface that may require the presence of enzymes? From a purely hypothetical point of view, the cellular activities in which cell surface enzymes are potentially functional can be divided into two categories; first, those activities related to the production and maintenance of the cell surface structure itself, and second, those activities which are concerned with interactions between the cell and its environment. During growth of a cell, as it enlarges, new structural ma terial must be synthesized and assembled in the cell membrane. Although it is conceivable that new structural material is synthesized in the interior of the cell, it is difficult to visualize its complete synthesis and final assembly in the periphery of the cell, without the assistance of enzymes at the site. In the case of non-growing cells, although no net synthesis of new structural material is necessary, the turnover of the various components by a continuous degradation and resynthesis must be considered as a pos sibility.

Cell Surface Receptors: A Short Course on Theory and Methods, 3rd Edition, links theoretical insights into drug-receptor interactions described in mathematical models with the experimental strategies to characterize the biological receptor of interest. The study of receptors has changed considerably over the period of the publication of the three editions of this book. The cloning of several genomes makes it unlikely that preparations of receptors now or in the future will arise from their purification as trace proteins from native tissues, but rather from a myriad of molecular approaches. Nonetheless, understanding the molecular mechanisms and ultimately the in vivo biology of these receptors means that investigators will engage in molecular, cellular and ultimate in vivo strategies. It should be of value to investigators who want to identify, characterize and understand the biology of a receptor of interest.

This series was established to create comprehensive treatises on specific topics in developmental biology. Such volumes serve a useful role in developmental biology, since it is a very diverse field that receives contributions from a wide variety of disciplines. This series is a meeting-ground for the various practi tioners of this science, facilitating an integration of heterogeneous information on specific topics. Each volume is intended to provide the conceptual basis for a comprehen sive understanding of its topic as well as an analysis of the key experiments upon which that understanding is based. The specialist in any aspect of devel opmental biology should understand the experimental background of the field and be able to place that body of information in context to ascertain where additional research would be fruitful. At that point, the creative process gener ates new experiments. This series is intended to be a vital link in that ongoing process of learning and discovery.

Cell Surface And Differentiation written by T. Muramatsu and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-06-30 with Science categories.

Cell surface membranes contain a range of types of molecule of which proteins form a significant part, and which play important roles in regulating cellular activities, such as growth and differentiation. In recent years considerable advances have been made in the understanding of the structure and function of cell surface molecules, partly stimulated by the development of recombinant DNA technologies. This book provides a review of current knowledge of the molecular biology of the cell surface with particular emphasis on cell differentiation, relating the molecular properties of the cell surface to developmental biology. In addition to the central theme of cell differentiation, cell surface markers, which are useful in monitoring differentiation and cell adhesion molecules, which influence differentiation, are covered.

Biology and Chemistry of Eucaryotic Cell Surfaces contains the proceedings of the Miami Winter Symposia, held on January 14- 15, 1974 and organized by the Department of Biochemistry, University of Miami School of Medicine, in Miami, Florida. Organized into 27 chapters, separating the manuscripts presented at the symposium, this book presents the stochastic studies on cell surface stickiness and the adhesion and aggregation of blood platelets. This text also explains the cell-contact and transformation-induced changes in the dynamic organization of normal and neoplastic cell plasma membranes and their role in lectin-mediated toxicity toward tumor cells. It also looks into the chemical components of surface membranes related to biological properties, carbohydrate antigens of cell surfaces, and molecular orientation of erythrocyte membrane glycoproteins. Some other chapters discuss the cell envelope glycoprotein biosynthesis in fungi, cellular lectin receptors, and topographical alterations of the fat cell surface membrane elicited by concanavalin A. Immunochemical evidence for putrescine sites on the membrane of mammalian cells, as well as the fractionation and biosynthesis of membrane components in erythroid cells, are also described.

The Cell Surface: Mediator of Developmental Processes contains the papers presented at the 38th Symposium of the Society for Developmental Biology, held at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in June 1979. The compendium is divided into three parts. The first part provides a summary of the status of the knowledge about the cell surface, which includes the plasma membrane, its associated cytoskeleton and the variety of surface-associated macromolecules. The second portion focuses on the early development of the cell surface. A wide spectrum of techniques, systems, and results in the study of the cell surface are presented. The last part shows a variety of experimental systems in which the cell surface figures prominently in important developmental events. The results from experiments on plant symbiosis, mammalian teratocarcinomas, adhesion and cell shape, and various extracellular macromolecules are detailed extensively. Cytologists, microbiologists, biologists, and other scientists in allied fields will find the publication very insightful.

This volume deals with the significance of the apoblast and the intracellular matrix in cell to cell signaling in plants and animals. Researchers working on human, animal and plant systems discuss their own specific problems. The dynamics of the cell surface as related to both growth and development, as well as to the transduction of environmental signals and the feed-back from genetic information to the cell surface are comprehensively covered. Special emphasis is laid on experimental models, their applicability and discussion of possible directions for future research.
