Excerpt from The Biology of War "The Biology of War" was written in German, by a German, for Germans, written since the outbreak of war, in the German fortress of Graudenz in which the author was imprisoned. If the German Government could have had its way, the book would never have seen the light, at any rate not so long as the war lasted; but by a happy chance the manuscript was conveyed to Switzerland, where it was brought out by the leading German-Swiss publishing firm, Orell Fussli of Zurich. When the book appeared, it was promptly barred from Germany, the reasons for which will soon be obvious to anyone who reads it; and the author was condemned to five months imprisonment in a common jail. At present he is interned in Germany, and carefully watched. Indeed, were it not for his position, he would probably still be in prison like Liebknecht, or would have shared the fate of Edith Cavell or Captain Fryatt. Dr. G. F. Nicolai was born in Berlin in 1872. Before the outbreak of war he was known throughout Germany as the leading heart specialist, in which capacity he had attended the German Empress, whom he is said to have saved from a troublesome malady. He also held the chair of physiology at Berlin University. He married a daughter of Admiralitasrat Buslay, and has one child, a daughter. Even before the war Dr. Nicolai was opposed to Prussian militarism, and when war broke out and Germany violated. Belgian neutrality, he openly protested. From anthrax to botulism, from smallpox to Ebola, the threat of biological destruction is rapidly overtaking our collective fear of atomic weaponry. This riveting narrative traces America's own covert biological weapons program from its origins in World War II to its abrupt cancellation in 1969. In light of America's increasing surveillance and condemnation of foreign biological weapons programs, this expos of America's own dangerous Cold War secret is both fascinating and shocking. The project, at its peak, employed 5,000 people and tested pathogens on 2,000 live human volunteers; conducted open-air tests on American soil; sprayed our cities with bacterial aerosols; and stockpiled millions of bacterial bombs for instant deployment. Yet, surprisingly, almost nothing has been published about this project until now. This is the first book to expose the true story of America's secret program to create biological weapons of mass destruction.

Excerpt from The Way Out of War: Notes on the Biology of the Subject Sociology has failed in its attempt at bring ing the subject of warfare down to satisfactory conclusion. Psychology then took up the task, as a specialist, but without practical result. The reason for this is because sociology and psychol ogy belong largely to educational conviction. Warfare as an expression of natural law cannot be examined critically excepting from its funda mentals in natural history. The first book to expose the true story of America's secret program to create biological weapons of mass destruction. From anthrax to botulism, from smallpox to Ebola, the threat of biological destruction is rapidly overtaking our collective fear of atomic weaponry. In an era when a lone fanatic could wipe out an entire population with the contents of a small vial, the specter of germ warfare has moved into a prominent position in the public's mind. This riveting narrative traces America's own covert biological weapons program from its origins in World War II to its abrupt cancellation in 1969. This project, at its peak, employed 5,000 people, tested pathogens on 2,000 live human volunteers, and conducted open-air tests on American soil. The U.S. government appropriated research from Japanese experiments on Chinese civilians, thus benefiting from one of the twentieth century's greatest atrocities; sprayed its own cities with bacterial aerosols; and stockpiled millions of bacterial bombs for instant deployment. Yet, surprisingly, almost nothing has been published about this project until now. In light of America's increasing surveillance and condemnation of foreign biological weapons programs, this exposé of America's own dangerous Cold War secret is both fascinating and shocking.

The use of biological warfare (BW) agents by states or terrorists is one of the world's most frightening security threats but, thus far, little attention has been devoted to understanding how to improve policies and procedures to identify and attribute BW events. Terrorism, War, or Disease? is the first book to examine the complex political, military, legal, and scientific challenges involved in determining when BW have been used and who has used them. Through detailed analysis of the most significant and controversial allegations of BW use from the Second World War to the present, internationally recognized experts assess past attempts at attribution of unusual biological events and draw lessons to improve our ability to counter these deadly silent killers. This volume presents the most comprehensive analysis of actual and alleged BW use, and provides an up-to-date evaluation of law enforcement, forensic epidemiology, and arms control measures available to policymakers to investigate and attribute suspected attacks.

From assassination attempts using anthrax and ricin laced letters to the ongoing Ebola outbreaks in West Africa, the presence of biological warfare agents emphasize the immediate need to disseminate information to practitioners and educate future practitioners of medical sciences on how to effectively manage exposure to these deadly toxins and diseases. This detailed and concisely written textbook contains up to date information, covering aspects such as the molecular biology of the pathogen, differential diagnoses, treatment options and decontamination measures for thirty-five weaponized (or potentially weaponized) biological warfare agents. The text permits students, emergency responders, physicians and researchers to understand the biology, treatment and management of individuals exposed to biological agents. When dealing with any type of outbreak or exposure, time is critical in effective management; this text is an invaluable and comprehensive resource. The introductory material of the text provides a unique historical perspective on the use of biological agents. Chapters one through three focus on viral agents, bacterial agents (and their toxins) and toxins. Each of these chapters examines each known agent individually and covers the symptoms of exposure, detection of the agent, treatment options and differential diagnoses for that agent, providing a quick reference in emergency situations. Chapters four and five cover federal regulations, the detection of biological agents, decontamination methods, and personal protection. The text closes with a discussion on biological terrorism, the production and/or isolation of agents, as well as the difficulties associated with their production and/or isolation. This text takes a unique and systematic approach in the information that is presented, providing a quick, but detailed reference that is invaluable in situations where time is of the essence.
