Excerpt from The Birds of Africa, Vol. 5: Comprising All the Species Which Occur in the Ethiopian Region; Part II The present instalment completes the fifth volume of the late Captain Shelley's great undertaking. Soon after the appearance of the first part of the present volume in 1906, the author was struck down by a sudden illness - a stroke of paralysis - and although he lived on till November 29, 1910, he was unable to continue his labours. The completion of his work, however, was constantly in his thoughts, and shortly before his death I was asked by Mrs. Shelley if I would undertake this task. It was not, however, until afterwards, in the middle of last year, that the arrange ments could be made for doing so. Mrs. Shelley then handed over to me all the mss. And the proofs of four sheets which were already in type. The plan and arrangement of the present part is mainly that of the late Captain Shelley, and my task has been to supply descriptions of some of the species, many of which were very incomplete, to revise the whole in the light of the additional facts and discoveries of the last six years, and to pass the work through the press. I am indebted to my, father, Mr. P. L. Sclater, for having read through the proofs for me, and to Mr. Ogilvie Grant for much help and many facili ties afforded to me in the Bird Room at the British Museum. Excerpt from The Birds of Africa, Comprising All the Species Which Occur in the Ethiopian Region, Vol. 4 The name of Weaver-bird has been given to the members of this family on account of their peculiar habit of weaving together the materials with which they construct their solid and often beautiful nests. When on reeds or in trees they are often suspended in colonies, and the entrance passage is frequently formed like a sleeve, varying from a few inches in length up to about five feet. Others will construct in company a single substantial roof for the protection of a whole colony. The family is confined to the tropical portion of the Old World. Some 250 species (more than two-thirds) inhabit the Ethiopian region, and only about ten of these range beyond its boundary. The members of this family may be readily distinguished from all the other Ethiopian Finches, not only by the well marked first primary being shorter than all the others, but also by the bare culmen extending back so as to divide the feathers of the forehead into two portions. Excerpt from The Birds of Africa, Vol. 5: Comprising All the Species Which Occur Ethiopian Region The members of this Section have the plumage of the young birds duller than that of the adults, sometimes more streaked or blotched, but never more barred, as in the Lanii or Shrikes, nor more spotted, as in the Turdi or Thrush group, and never brighter than the adults, as is the case in the Silvy Bor Warblers. They differ from the Frhujill, or Finches, in the form of the bill; from the Alaul, or Larks, in the back of the tarsus being plain, not scutellated, and the secondaries never reach to the tip of the wing; from the other four Sections they differ in their mode of feeding, often perching on the ground for that purpose and they are more omnivorous. Flight powerful; wings pointed; bill and feet strong; generally gregarious; not migratory Oriolus galbula excepted); sexes generally alike in plumage; size about that of a Thrush, excepting in the Corvid, the largest of which is the Raven. Nest cup-shaped and placed among boughs or in holes. Eggs, generally five in a clutch, are uniform or spotted.
