Excerpt from Supplement to the Birds of Essex County, Massachusetts Fifteen years have passed since Memoir III of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, "The Birds of Essex County, Massachusetts," was published. In these fifteen years many changes have taken place in the bird-life of the County, many more observers have studied it, and many notes have been accumulated. It is the purpose of this Supplement to bring our knowledge of the birds of the County up to date, and in order that it may be complete in itself all the species are listed whether or not there are any changes or additions in the annotations. Changes are made in the nomenclature wherever necessary to conform to the latest American Ornithologists Union Check-list.1 As several species new to the list have been added, the serial numbers are changed. The additions are denoted by an asterisk (*). In the original Memoir I gave in detail the habits and field-marks of most of the water-birds and of several other birds of especial interest for the County. In this Supplement I have added to the notes on these birds, wherever possible, have increased this list by the addition of the hawks and some others, and in many cases have laid special stress on courtship habits, the study of which in the last fifteen years has especially interested me. When the original Memoir was published, there were none living in Essex County sufficiently interested in birds to become members of the American Ornithologists' Union. At the present time there are twelve members listed from the County. In addition there is a very active club, - the Essex County Ornithological Club, - with a membership of about fifty having its headquarters and monthly meetings at the Peabody Museum in Salem. The Club was founded in 1916, but for some eight years prior many of the present members were in the habit of making an annual trip by canoe on the Ipswich River at the height of the warbler migration in May. In preparing this Memoir I have consulted the records of the Club, of which I have the honor to be a charter member. The first number of the annual Bulletin of the Club appeared in December, 1919. The number of contributors of notes and records to this Supplement has increased to a great extent. Their names will be found in the Annotated List in connection with their contributions. To all of them I wish to express my grateful thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Birds of Essex County, Massachusetts IN the following pages will be found first, a brief description Of Essex County with a general view of its geology, flora, and faunal areas; then follow chapters on the regions and their birds, peculiar to a maritime county, namely, the ocean, the sand beaches, the sand dunes, and the salt marshes. There are also chapters on the fresh marshes and on the ponds and their birds. These are followed by Chapters on the records from lighthouses along the coast and on the ornithological history of Essex County. In the introduction to the Annotated List, the names of many ornitho logical workers are given who have generously contributed their notes and Observations, and to all of these I wish here to express my sincere thanks. Particularly I wish to thank Mr. William Brewster for the use of his collection and for the identification of doubtful specimens; Mr. Walter Deane for many kindnesses and for reviewing the botanical part of this list; Mr. W. A. Jeffries for his own notes and those of his brother, the late Dr. J. A. Jeffries; Mr. J. A. Farley for many valuable records, especially as regards the breeding of birds of prey; Dr. J. C. Phillips for his records from Wenham Lake; Mr. John Rob inson and Mr. John H. Sears for their kindness to me in the use Of the col lection of the Peabody Academy, at Salem; Mr. Ralph Hoffmann for much kindly help and criticism, and Dr. Glover M. Allen for his great assistance in revising manuscript and proof. I am also indebted to him for the map. I have attempted to make the Annotated List' as' complete and accurate as possible, and have banished to a doubtful list all birds about which there is the least question. In the case of most of the water birds the annotations are given fully from my own observations not only as to the habits of the birds but also as to their call notes and their recognition in the field, as these birds are so characteristic of a seashore region, and are so often slightly treated in the books. Of the land birds, a few only of the characteristic and interesting ones are treated at any length, such as the Horned Lark, American Crow, Snow Bunting, Lapland Longspur, Ipswich Sparrow, Sharp-tailed Sparrows, the Swal lows, and a few others. A Bibliography is given at the end of the memoir. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Birds of Berkshire County: Massachusetts Berkshire is the westernmost county of Massachusetts and extends across the state, from Connecticut on the south to Vermont on the north. Its western border is formed by the New York line, and on the east it is bordered by the counties of Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire. Its length from north to south is about fifty miles; its width, though fairly constant, varies from twenty-four to fourteen miles. The extremes of latitude are 42 2 N. and 42 44 N., and it is comprised between the meridians 73 W. and 73 30 W. With the exception of Worcester and Barnstable counties, none of the political divisions of the mainland of Massachusetts possess such a marked topographical individuality as Berkshire county. "The Berkshires" constitute a well-defined region - one which, from its natural beauty, is constantly becoming more widely known and loved, and it is partly on account of this ever increasing popular interest in the region, that the authors have felt justified in presenting in this paper their knowledge of the avifauna of Berkshire. Two ranges of hills, running north and south, and separated by valleys of varying width, constitute the most marked feature of the topography of Berkshire. Along the western, or New York, border, run the Taconics, a series of more or less isolated hills, through which comparatively deep side valleys have been worn. This range includes Berlin Mountain (2804 feet) on the north, Potter Mountain (2410 feet), Perry's Peak (2077 feet), and the great mass of Mount Everett, better known in Berkshire as the Dome (2624 feet), which occupies the southwestern corner of the county. The eastern half of the county, as well as the western part of the adjoining counties to the eastward, is occupied by a broad mass of rugged upland, including a comparatively broad watershed, with a steep western and a long eastern slope. This rugged mass forms the greater part of the "Berkshire Hills," so called. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Birds of Essex: A Contribution to the Natural History of the County The publication of this work is an attempt to meet what has, I believe, been a long-felt want, similar works having met with acceptance in most other counties. Students of Nature have ever been fully alive to the importance of works describing the Fauna of Counties or other local areas. From such works, the larger general histories of particular countries and regions are built up. Ornithologists, especially, have been very active in publishing local works of this kind. There are now very few of the larger and more important English counties in which some attempt has not been made by a local observer to describe in the form of a book the species of birds which have been observed from time to time to frequent his own particular district. Stevenson's Birds of Norfolk, Mitchell's Birds of Lancashire, Clarke and Roebuck's Vertebrata of Yorkshire, Babington's Birds of Suffolk, Harting's Birds of Middlesex, Macphcrson and Duckworth's Birds of Cumberland, Smith's Birds of Somersetshire, and Mansell-Pleydell's Birds of Dorsetshire, are a few good instances of the kind of work referred to, while there are many more, equally worthy of mention, and others arc known to be in preparation. Hitherto, however, the birds of Essex have not found a chronicler. It is to supply this omission that I have laboured. My present work, for which I have been collecting information and materials for over fifteen years, will, I trust, interest all lovers of Nature, and, in particular, all bird-students, not only within our own county but also throughout Great Britain. Excerpt from The Birds of Amherst and Vicinity: Including Nearly the Whole of Hampshire County, Massachusetts The author of this work, an associate member of the Ameri can Ornithologists' Union, has taken great pains to incorporate into this paper all desirable information concerning the birds of this region, including a brief, technical description of each species, the times of migrating, nesting, and food habits, whether beneficial or injurious, and a very useful key for the determination of the species. It is believed that very few, if any, birds, which' occur in Hampshire County, have been omitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
