Excerpt from The Birds of New Jersey The object of this work is the familiarizing of the every day citizen unused to scientific terms, with the habits and economic importance of the birds of the State of New Jersey. The study of Ornithology as suggested in books treating on the subject is one attended with difficulties sufficient to dampen the ardor of even the more than willing student. The long and high-sounding names used in the scientific nomenclature - which even Latinizes common English words - the many divisions into families and species. and the disputes of authors as to what particular family a certain bird belongs to have undoubtedly in the past deterred many from following a study in itself so interesting and so useful. In the present treatise the author has avoided all scientific terms and designations and has endeavored to foster a better acquaintance between the human family and its feathered friends without necessitating the medium of protracted study on the part of those who would like to know more about the birds around us. For the advanced student this book will be of no value, for in it will be found no learned disquisitions pertaining to the higher phases of Ornithology; it simply purports to tell in plain language sufficient about the habits of birds to indicate their value to mankind and by plain descriptions to facilitate identification. The bobolink, with its variable plumage and merry song, is an object of interest, but that interest will be minimized to a great many when they are told that the first thing of importance to know about the bobolink is that he is a dolichonyx oryzvorus of the family of icteridae. Scientific classification has its manifold uses, but there is something so deterrent about it to the average reader that it has been wholly eschewed in the present publication. Excerpt from The Birds of East Pennsylvania and New Jersey The diffusion of well authenticated information regarding the distribution of American birds, is yet a matter for future observa tion. There have been, no doubt, many important contributions. On this subject, of late years, yet the field is so extensive that many years must elapse before we can lay claim to a thorough knowledge of many important particulars, which patient research and well timed energy alone can solve. The author of the present little work, while claiming for it the-merit of careful observation, extending over a period of several years, at the same time believes the plan of the Catalogue to be capable'of attaining more useful results, if 'enlarged in proportion to the nature of the districts investigated. It is, therefore, to be hoped that accurate observers may undertake similar records, by means of which the next great work on the ornithology of our country may contain a better collection of facts, representing the phenomena of the remoter districts, than has yet been obtained. While making the usual acknowledgments to those who have so obligingly furnished the author with information, it gives him much pleasure to record his additional obligations to his friend, Mr Thomas S. Hutcheson, for his valuable services in superintending the work when passing through the press, and for other necessary aid, which, at this distance, is most' thankfully appreciated. Nor must he omit to thank another friend and correspondent - Mr Robert Gray, Secretary to the Natural History Society of Glasgow - for useful notices regarding some of the birds of the remoter Hebrides of Scotland, between which district and some parts of our own continent there would appear tobe an occasional inter migration of species. On this subject, however, the author may at a future time, conjointly with that gentleman, bring all the ascertained facts and observations under the notice of ornithologists in a separate form. Excerpt from Wild Birds of New York This little book is not expected to give everyone a complete history of the birds of this state. To do so would require an immense volume. But it is designed to bring to the attention of the reader the most common, the most interesting and the most valuable birds and to create an interest which it is hoped will be the means of starting many on a more extended study of our most interesting fauna. In the last few pages is a quite complete list of New York birds and concise data in regard to their occurrence. As might be expected considering the size and location of the state, a very great many species occur or have been taken here. The sandy beaches and mud flats of Long Island furnish an ideal retreat or resting place for all sorts of water fowl and shore birds. The Carolinian Area of the Austral Zone extends to Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley; hence a great many southern species occur, species that otherwise would be very unusual in this latitude, such as Kentucky, Hooded and Worm-eating Warblers. Excerpt from Birds of the New York City Region Seventeen years have passed since the appearance of Dr. Chapman's pamphlet on "The Birds of the Vicinity of New York City." This publication briefly summarized the information about our local birds available at that time, and was a veritable mine of inspiration and assistance to the modern generation of field ornithologists and amateur bird students, who were then just beginning work. It is difficult to conceive the change that has taken place in these seventeen years. For one person interested in birds then there are now hundreds, who cover almost every section of the area at every season of the year. When Dr. Chapman wrote, not only were many parts of his territory without a resident student, but many sections had never even been visited by anyone interested in birds, or had remained unvisited for many years. Twenty-five years ago an active field man went out collecting a few dozen times a year, or made two or three trips lasting a week or so apiece. Nowadays an active student will often be afield a hundred times in one year. The result is an enormous mass of data and notes of all kinds, which, when digested and arranged, greatly extend the knowledge of our birds, and modify many old conceptions of their status and distribution. The Linnaean Society of New York, throughout this period, has been the main center and nucleus for this growth of ornithological interest. At its meeting of October 14, 1919, Dr. Chapman moved that a committee be appointed to prepare as complete and detailed a Local Avifauna as present knowledge permitted. This committee, appointed somewhat later, consisted of Mr. J. T. Nichols as chairman, Dr. E. R. P. Janvrin, and the writer.
