The whole town of Tinker's Cove is looking forward to the celebration marking former librarian Julia Ward Howe Tilley's ninetieth birthday. Lucy Stone, Miss Tilley's closest friend, dreamed up the party idea--at about the same time she decided she's not getting old without a fight. Noticing crow's feet and a potential jelly belly, she's resolved to exercise more and purchase some heavy-duty wrinkle cream, asap! That sounds like a plan--until Lucy realizes her daughter's fourteenth birthday bash, a coed sleepover, may turn her hair white overnight. What was she thinking when she agreed to let Sara have the party? Obviously she wasn't thinking about the hormonal rampages of young teens. On her mind, instead, was the shocking death of Sherman Cobb, the town's oldest attorney, an apparent suicide. His law partner, however, thinks Sherman was murdered. Poking about in Sherman's papers, Lucy turns up an intriguing tie between the dead man and Miss Tilley. Meanwhile Miss Tilley's own past has come back to haunt her in the form of a mysterious niece named Shirley and a biker great nephew named Snake. Soon no one can get to see the elderly librarian because the brash, bossy Shirley says she's "failing." Is Miss Tilley in grave danger? Will Sara's party turn out to be a scandal? Now, as a killer's ruthless plan rushes toward a conclusion, Lucy needs answers fast--or else she and Miss Tilley won't live long enough to make a wish and blow out the candles on this year's birthday cake. . .

A body was discovered at the zoo in Lincoln Park on Chicago's upscale north side. The body was covered in blood, lying in the outside enclosure of one of the lion's cages. Next to the body, the lion was sleeping peacefully. Detectives Nikos Papakostis and Kaitlin Doyle, assigned to the case, discover a note on the body stating that the man had been killed because his father had broken the law. As Nikos and Kaitlin investigate further, they find that the 'law' the killer referred to is an Old Testament law, directing that the sins of the father would result in punishment of the sons, to the third and fourth generations Kaitlin reasoned that the current murder may not have been the only crime committed by the Old Testament killer, and indeed, in her research of the police files, she finds another crime committed many years earlier: the murder of a very talented adolescent, who was killed because his father had a gay relationship. The killer, who called himself 'Moses' left a note explaining that the son must die due to the sins of his father. The two detectives find that their every move seems to be anticipated by the killer, who has now threatened to strike again. They soon realize that they also may be targeted by the serial killer, who has increased his activity into a murderous frenzy. Nikos and Kaitlin do a great deal of their case work after hours at the Mykonos restaurant, owned by Nikos' uncle George. George is concerned with finding a mate for Nikos, preferably a nice Greek girl, especially since Kaitlin shows no romantic interest in Nikos. George finally arranges a meeting between Nikos and Roula, a distant cousin of Nikos' from Athens. Nikos feels distracted from trying to solve the crime and avoid the dreaded cousin. The drama of the murders unfold as Nikos is forced to confront his cousin from Greece. The story develops as Kaitlin and Nikos fight a battle against time to try to find the killer before he kills again, finally realizing that they themselves may be targeted to be the next victims of the crazed killer. The book explores the dark regions of a killers mind, the tragedy of his victims, the relationships which develop between the detectives and the other characters of the story. The narrative is filled with dark themes and a great deal of humor. It is a very readable and thought provoking study of religious delusion, solid relationships, failure and triumph, all in the context of believable characters and their interactions with each other. Once you start the book, you will not be able to put it down.

The inspiration for this story came from a black and white photograph taped on the refrigerator of the author and his wife. The photograph of the author's wife and three of her friends, was taken at a birthday dinner for one of the four women in the picture. The women had been friends for more than forty years. The author was so taken by the photo that he decided to tell the story of the friendships of four fictional women. The story follows the trials and triumphs of four women as they develop a friendship which spans forty four years. They first meet as students at the University of Illinois. Sarah, a recent immigrant from Great Britain, wakes up in the intensive care unit of the hospital after taking an overdose of medication. She had suffered a brutal assault at the hands of a star athlete two days prior. Feeling betrayed and friendless, she takes the overdose in a final act of desperation. Nicole, a fellow student in her literature class, is determined to help Sarah, and enlists the aid of two of her friends, Rebecca and Clair, to rescue Sarah, before she is admitted to a psychiatric ward. The four develop and carry out a plot to bring justice to Sarah's attacker. In the course of their at times hilarious scheme, the four women develop a bond of friendship which not only helps Sarah begin to heal from a lifetime of abuse, but also helps each one of them to deal with the crises in their own lives. We follow the tragedies and triumphs of the four women through their lives, as they grow older, marry and have families. Throughout the course of the forty four years of the story, their friendship remains a constant. They find that their bond of love for each other enables them to face the challenges of careers, marriage, children and the seemingly unbearable anguish of illness and loss in their lives. Each of the four women has her own gifts which they bring to the others to enable each one of them to deal with separate crises. The title of the story does not refer to a card playing club. It is a metaphor, describing the bridges which each of the four women must cross in the course of their lives. All four of the women face the crises in their lives with the love and support of friendship, which bridges the journey from adversity to triumph. The stories of each of the women is told with warmth and a great deal of humor. Even during the worst of times, the women find joy and laughter in their lives. The readers, male or female will find parallels in their own lives, as they journey with the four women.

Between 1866 and 1969, an estimated 8,000 individuals—at least 90 percent of whom were Native Hawaiians—were sent to Molokai’s remote Kalaupapa peninsula because they were believed to have leprosy. Unwilling to accept the loss of their families, homes, and citizenship, these individuals ensured they would be accorded their rightful place in history. They left a powerful testimony of their lives in the form of letters, petitions, music, memoirs, and oral history interviews. Kalaupapa combines more than 200 hours of interviews with archival documents, including over 300 letters and petitions written by the earliest residents translated from Hawaiian. It has long been assumed that those sent to Kalaupapa were unconcerned with the world they were forced to leave behind. The present work shows that residents remained actively interested and involved in life beyond Kalaupapa. They petitioned the Hawaii Legislative Assembly in 1874, seeking justice. They fervently supported Queen Liliuokalani and the Hawaiian Kingdom prior to annexation and contributed to the relief effort in Europe following World War I. In 1997 Kalaupapa residents advocated at the United Nations together with people affected by leprosy from around the world. This book presents at long last the story of Kalaupapa as told by its people.

In The Doomsday Mother, bestselling true crime author John Glatt tells the twisted tale of Lori Vallow, accused of having her two children murdered to start a new life with her new husband, doomsday prepper Chad Daybell. At first, the residents of Kauai Beach Resort took little notice of their new neighbors. The glamorous blonde and her tall husband fit the image of the ritzy gated community. The couple seemed to keep to themselves—until the police knocked on their door with a search warrant. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell had fled to Hawaii in the midst of being investigated for the disappearance of Lori’s children back in Idaho—Tylee and JJ—who hadn’t been seen alive in five months. For years, Lori Vallow had been devoted to her children and her Mormon faith. But when her path crossed with Chad Daybell, a religious zealot who taught his followers how to prepare for the end-times, the tumultuous relationship transformed her into someone unrecognizable. As authorities searched for Lori’s children, they uncovered more suspicious deaths with links to both Lori and Chad, including the death of Lori’s third and fourth husbands, her brother, and Chad’s wife. In June 2020, the gruesome remains of JJ and Tylee were discovered on Chad’s property, and the newlyweds were arrested and charged with murder. And in a shocking development, horrifying statements revealed that the couple’s fanatical beliefs had convinced them the children had become zombies--a belief that may have led to their deaths. Bestselling author and journalist John Glatt takes readers deeper into the devastating story of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell in an attempt to unravel the lethal relationship of this doomsday couple.
