INTRODUCTION. As I may, without vanity, presume that the name and official description prefixed to this Proem will secure it, from the sedate and reflecting part of mankind, to whom only I would be understood to address myself, such attention as is due to the sedulous instructor of youth, and the careful performer of my Sabbath duties, I will forbear to hold up a candle to the daylight, or to point out to the judicious those recommendations of my labours which they must necessarily anticipate from the perusal of the title-page. Nevertheless, I am not unaware, that, as Envy always dogs Merit at the heels, there may be those who will whisper, that albeit my learning and good principles cannot (lauded be the heavens) be denied by any one, yet that my situation at Gandercleugh hath been more favourable to my acquisitions in learning than to the enlargement of my views of the ways and works of the present generation. To the which objection, if, peradventure, any such shall be started, my answer shall be threefold: First, Gandercleugh is, as it were, the central part—the navel (SI FAS SIT DICERE) of this our native realm of Scotland; so that men, from every corner thereof, when travelling on their concernments of business, either towards our metropolis of law, by which I mean Edinburgh, or towards our metropolis and mart of gain, whereby I insinuate Glasgow, are frequently led to make Gandercleugh their abiding stage and place of rest for the night. And it must be acknowledged by the most sceptical, that I, who have sat in the leathern armchair, on the left-hand side of the fire, in the common room of the Wallace Inn, winter and summer, for every evening in my life, during forty years bypast (the Christian Sabbaths only excepted), must have seen more of the manners and customs of various tribes and people, than if I had sought them out by my own painful travel and bodily labour.

The Chronicles, from which this narrative is extracted, assure us, that during the long periodwhen the Welsh princes maintained their independence, the year 1187 was peculiarly marked asfavourable to peace betwixt them and their warlike neighbours, the Lords Marchers, who inhabitedthose formidable castles on the frontiers of the ancient British, on the ruins of which the travellergazes with wonder. This was the time when Baldwin, Archbishop of Canterbury, accompanied bythe learned Giraldus de Barri, afterwards Bishop of Saint David's, preached the Crusade from castleto castle, from town to town; awakened the inmost valleys of his native Cambria with the call toarms for recovery of the Holy Sepulchre; and, while he deprecated the feuds and wars of Christianmen against each other, held out to the martial spirit of the age a general object of ambition, and ascene of adventure, where the favour of Heaven, as well as earthy renown, was to reward thesuccessful champions.Yet the British chieftains, among the thousands whom this spirit- stirring summons called fromtheir native land to a distant and perilous expedition, had perhaps the best excuse for declining thesummons. The superior skill of the Anglo-Norman knights, who were engaged in constant inroadson the Welsh frontier, and who were frequently detaching from it large portions, which theyfortified with castles, thus making good what they had won, was avenged, indeed, but notcompensated, by the furious inroads of the British, who, like the billows of a retiring tide, rolled onsuccessively, with noise, fury, and devastation; but, on each retreat, yielded ground insensibly to theirinvaders.A union among the native princes might have opposed a strong and permanent barrier to theencroachments of the strangers; but they were, unhappily, as much at discord among themselves asthey were with the Normans, and were constantly engaged in private war with each other, of whichthe common enemy had the sole advantage. The invitation to the Crusade promised something at least of novelty to a nation peculiarly ardentin their temper; and it was accepted by many, regardless of the consequences which must ensue, tothe country which they left defenceless. Even the most celebrated enemies of the Saxon andNorman race laid aside their enmity against the invaders of their country, to enrol themselves underthe banners of the Crusade.

The story is set just after the Union of Scotland and England (1707), in the Liddesdale hills of the Scottish Borders, familiar to Scott from his work collecting ballads for The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. The main character is based on David Ritchie, whom Scott met in the autumn of 1797. In the tale, the dwarf is Sir Edward Mauley, a hermit regarded by the locals as being in league with the Devil, who becomes embroiled in a complex tale of love, revenge, betrayal, Jacobite schemes and a threatened forced marriage. Scott began the novel well, "but tired of the ground I had trode so often before... I quarrelled with my story, & bungled up a conclusion." Critics and public found it poor in comparison with its popular companion Old Mortality. One of the harshest reviews was in the Quarterly Review, written anonymously by Scott himself. The introduction to The Black Dwarf attributes the work to Jedediah Cleishbotham, whom Scott had invented as a fictional editor of the Landlord series. It is here that we have the most complete view of this character.
