In this distillation of frontline experiences and cultural insights, Anita Pratap, one of the finest journalists India has ever produced, faithfully reports on the consequences of war, ethnic conflict, earthquakes, cyclones, prejudices, and the mindless hatred and fear that has hurt so much of the world. Wherever there was a story to be told-from her native India to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka-Pratap braved the odds to send in reports from the front, managing to track down elusive stories and make headlines. With determined diligence she exposed the terrors inside such frightening regimes as the Taliban, returning home each time with a renewed determination to appreciate and celebrate the ordinary.

Excerpt from A Treatise on the Blood, Inflammation, and Gun-Shot Wounds The external ears of many animals furnish us with another instance of the joint application of these two powers; for being chiefly composed of elastic cartilage, they retain a general uniformity of shape, although that is capable of being altered occasionally by the action of muscles. It is however to be observed, that in all cases where these two powers are joined, the muscular, as it can, always act in opposition to the elastic, must be the strongest and capable of being carried further than the other; it therefore must always be proportionably stronger than it otherwise need to have been. The Language Of Blood written by Jane Jeong Trenka and has been published by Minnesota Historical Society Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Adopted children categories.

An adoptee's search for identity takes her on a journey from Minnesota to Korea and back as she seeks to resolve the dualities that have long defined her life: Korean-born, American-raised, never fully belonging to either. For years, Korean adoptee Jane Jeong Trenka tried to be the ideal daughter. She was always polite, earned perfect grades, and excelled as a concert pianist. She went to church with her American family in small-town Minnesota and learned not to ask about the mother who had given her away. Then, while she was far from home on a music scholarship, living in a big city for the first time, one of her fellow university students began to follow her, his obsession ultimately escalating into a plot for her murder. In radiant prose that ranges seamlessly from pure lyricism to harrowing realism, Trenka recounts repeated close encounters with her stalker and the years of repressed questions that her ordeal awakened. Determined not to be defined by her stalker's twisted assessment of her worth, she struck out in search of her own identity - free of western stereotypes of geishas and good girls. Doing so, however, meant confronting her American family and fighting the bureaucracy at the agency that had arranged for her adoption. Jane Jeong Trenka dares to ask fundamental questions about the nature of family and identity. Are we who we decide to be, or who other people would make us? What is this bond more powerful than words, this unspoken language of blood? To find out, Trenka must reacquaint herself with her mother and sisters in Seoul and devise a way to blend two distinct cultures into one she seared into the memory by indelible images and unforgettable prose. This is a poetic tour-de-force by an essential new voice in Asian American literature.

A KGB killer, a beautiful young prima donna with a wild past and a Midwestern deputy sheriff who has lost his way collide in a desperate search for a lost archive worth billions of dollars, containing documents that could change the course of history. The secret papers, linked to a mystery surrounding the brutal murder by the Bolshevik Cheka of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, expose the heartless machinations of Stalin's inner circle. The search for the lost archive intertwines three diverse lives. Mikhail Borisov, ex KGB, now a wealthy oligarch exiled from Russia, risks all to return to power. He is haunted by deeds he performed in the past. Katya Marston, spoiled, brought up in luxury in England, has been orphaned since birth, her parents unknown. Reuben Yoder, known as Roo, a deputy sheriff regrets his misspent life and seeks redemption. Katya and Roo hold the key to finding the archive but at a price that may cost them their lives as they race between London, New York, Ohio and the French Alps to save the course of history. This historically accurate thriller is a sequel to The Blood Stiller, Book One of the Russian Trilogy, but can be read as a novel on its own. The action packed plot weaves the dark violent past of the Russian Revolution involving the Romanovs and deliberations of Stalin's murderous clique into an equally intriguing present day adventure exploring the mystery surrounding the lives of the three main characters.

" “Blood is a very Special Fluid” Each one of you will doubtless be aware that the title of this lecture is taken from Goethe’s Faust. You all know that in this poem we are shown how Faust, the representative of the highest human effort, enters into a pact with the evil powers, who on their side are represented in the poem by Mephistopheles, the emissary of hell. You will know, too, that Faust is to strike a bargain with Mephistopheles, the deed of which must be signed with his own blood. Faust, in the first instance, looks upon it as a jest. Mephistopheles, however, at this juncture utters the sentence which Goethe without a doubt intended should be taken seriously: “Blood is a very special fluid. ” Now, with reference to this line in Goethe’s Faust, we come to a curious trait in the so-called Goethe commentators. You are of course aware how vast is the literature dealing with Goethe’s version of the Faust Legend. It is a literature of such stupendous dimensions that whole libraries might be stocked with it, and naturally I cannot make it my business to expatiate on the various comments made by these interpreters of Goethe concerning this particular passage..."

In 1609, the entire Muslim population of Spain was given three days to leave Spanish territory or else be killed. In a brutal and traumatic exodus, entire families were forced to abandon the homes and villages where they had lived for generations. In just five years, Muslim Spain had effectively ceased to exist: an estimated 300,000 Muslims had been removed from Spanish territory making it what was then the largest act of ethnic cleansing in European history. Blood and Faith is a riveting chronicle of this virtually unknown episode, set against the vivid historical backdrop of Muslim Spain. It offers a remarkable window onto a little-known period in modern Europe - a rich and complex tale of competing faiths and beliefs, of cultural oppression and resistance against overwhelming odds.
