This is a play about race. About apartheid, which is technically dead, and racism, which is very much alive. It's about the to-the-bone love between brothers; the kind that transcends skin color and crosses social chasms. Or not. Family can at times tread a fine line between love and less admirable emotions. Sometimes it even crosses over. These men and their story invite you to explore that complex and compelling contradiction. To dig beneath the surface of what makes us kin, and what happens when we don't like what we find there. Like all the best plays, Blood Knot is both relatable and searingly intimate. And like all the best plays, it will get under your skin. Two brothers live a quiet, strained existence in a tiny house in apartheid South Africa. Morris, who has very fair skin, and has in the past passed as white, has recently returned to Port Elizabeth and is living with his brother Zachariah, who works long, painful hours as a sentry at the gate of a whites-only park. Despite Morris' constant presence, Zach is lonely for the company of a woman, so Morris suggests he find a pen pal. When it turns out Zach's pen pal isn't who they thought, the brothers' desperation exposes the complex angles of their relationship in this powerful play by the man who wrote The Island (produced at APT in 2015) and Exits and Entrances (at APT in 2010).

These three Port Elizabeth plays, which established South African playwright Athol Fugard's international reputation more than twenty years ago, examine with passion and grace close family relationships strained almost unendurably by the harshest of economic and political conditions. "A rare playwright, who could be a primary candidate for either the Nobel Prize in Literature or the Nobel Peace Prize."-Mel Gussow, The New Yorker.

Athol Fugard written by Alan Shelley and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-30 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A playwright whose work is appreciated on a global scale, Athol Fugard's plays have done more to document and provide a cultural commentary on Apartheid-era South Africa than any other writer in the last century. Using mostly migrant workers and township dwellers, and staging guerrilla-raid productions in black areas, Fugard frequently came into conflict with the government, forcing him to take his work overseas. Consequently, powerful plays such as The Blood Knot, Sizwe Banzi is Dead, and Master Harold... and the boys came to broadcast the inequities of the Apartheid-era to the world. Fugard's work retains an insistent influence, and is studied and performed the world over. Alan Shelley's study is an accessible but profound analysis of the man, his work and its influence, the social injustices that drive him, and the lives of those who people his remarkable plays.
