The Boardinghouse is an account of how a diverse group of high spirited, self-assured, talented youths were able to meld in supporting one another during Vogel's first year as a student at the Chicago Art Institute's School of Fine Art during the desperate times of the great depression. The book portrays one year in the lives of eighteen young men from various parts of the country who shared similar dreams of becoming an artist. In this Artist Community House, under the charge of Malcolm Hackett, some of the other young art students included Don Goodall, later to become Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Southern California and then the University of Texas at Austin; Gibson Danes, later to become chairman of the Art Department at UCLA and then Yale School of Art and Archeology; Dick Shaw who later would work on such cartoons as "Grin and Bear It," and "Mr. Magoo."

The Boarding House by William Trevor - a darkly comic novel by one of the world's best writers William Bird has always taken in boarders who are on the fringes of society: the petty conman, the immigrant who's never been able to fit in, the blustering officer who really doesn't know what's what , and the just plain lonely. He's built a unique place with a unique atmosphere. But then he realizes he's dying, and he decides to leave the place to the two tenants likely to cause the greatest amount of trouble, and the whole enterprise goes up in smoke. William Trevor's dark comedy, reminiscent of Evelyn Waugh and Muriel Spark, was his second novel. 'Trevor has the knack of slicing life so that it reveals lower layers we have not suspected' Daily Mail 'He tells you the most outrageous things in a most pleasant manner, hardly ever raising his voice' Guardian William Trevor was born in Mitchelstown, County Cork, in 1928, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He has lived in England for many years. The author of numerous acclaimed collections of short stories and novels, he has won many awards including the Whitbread Book of the Year, The James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence. He has been shortlisted three times for the Booker Prize: in 1976 with his novel The Children of Dynmouth, in 1991 with Reading Turgenev and in 2002 with The Story of Lucy Gault. He recently received the prestigious David Cohen Literature Prize in recognition of a lifetime's literary achievement.

Don't miss The Boardinghouse, a powerful story of love, resilience, and standing together in the face of adversity. ----------------------------------------------------------------- READERS ARE ENJOYING THE MOUNTAIN WOMEN SERIES: FIVE STARS: "The more of this series I read, the more I want to read! This one REALLY resonated... Every book includes adversity to overcome and I've learned that the main character, May Rose, is our influencer as a reader and also in her community as a character. Another installment from the mining town of Winkler where life is a daily struggle. If you enjoy historic novels set in the early 1900s, this is for you! Light reading? Yes, but also interesting and enjoyable from cover to cover." -Goodreads Reviewer FIVE STARS: "History meets local color in early 20th century West Virginia, and comes alive through well wrought characters in a gripping narrative. Carol Ervin is a story teller par excellence. I loved The Waltons, but this is closer to the real thing. Sorry, John Boy." -Goodreads Reviewer FIVE STARS: "I am hooked! I have enjoyed these first 5 books so much. They're addictive!...I can't wait to see what happens next to the characters, and I enjoy reading about daily life in that time period." -Goodreads Reviewer FIVE STARS: "I really can't get enough of the Mountain Women series... If you are looking for a great series of books, this is one to put on your list." -Goodreads Reviewer

The humdrum of Ivy Log, Georgia, explodes with passion and heartache when mountain-man Wiley Hanson leaves his idyllic life high in the Appalachians and falls in love with seductive redhead Paula Jennings AND irresistible mixed-blood Pyune Murphy. The Boardinghouse, the second novel in author Sue Chamblin Frederick's "Ivy Log" Series, returns to the little mountain town, this time in the dead of winter, and unleashes a flurry of turmoil when Wiley has to choose between lust and love-and the townsfolk have to make a decision that makes his choice pale by comparison. The unforgettable characters you loved in Grandma Takes A Lover send you on a wild ride down the snow-covered mountains to the New York headquarters of Bakers' World Magazine and on to the campus of Harvard University before ultimately returning to the hot fires of The Boardinghouse kitchen-as one way or another peace returns to Ivy Log . . . or does it?
