The Body of the Cross is a study of holy victims in Western Christian history and how the uses of their bodies in Christian thought led to the idea of the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice. Since its first centuries, Christianity has traded on the suffering of victims—martyrs, mystics, and heretics—as substitutes for the Christian social body. These victims secured holiness, either by their own sacred power or by their reprobation and rejection. Just as their bodies were mediated in eucharistic, social, and Christological ways, so too did the flesh of Jesus Christ become one of those holy substitutes. But it was only late in Western history that he took on the function of the exemplary victim. In tracing the story of this embodied development, The Body of the Cross gives special attention to popular spirituality, religious dissent, and the writing of women throughout Christian history. It examines the symbol of the cross as it functions in key moments throughout this history, including the parting of the ways of Judaism and Christianity, the gnostic debates, martyr traditions, and medieval affective devotion and heresy. Finally, in a Reformation era haunted by divine wrath, these themes concentrated in the unique concept that Jesus Christ died on the cross to absorb divine punishment for sin: a holy body and a rejected body in one.

The sign of the Cross, the tracing of the Cross of Christ onto the body, is a private and public gesture of blessing that millions of Christians do during worship and throughout their day. Greek scholar and practicing Orthodox Christian Andreopoulos explores the history, symbolism, and meaning of the gesture in this short book. He finds the sign one of the most fascinating elements of ritual symbolism, one that combines simplicity and profound meaning to a greater extent than any other symbol.

One is his mother. Another is a friend. Still another is a stranger. They are among the seven people who witness Jesus' death on the cross. Their remarkable, life-altering stories are told here, in Being the Body of Christ: What the People of the Passion Teach us about Jesus Today. Drawing from Scripture and tradition, Marci Alborghetti creates tender, profoundly personal depictions of each encounter; we feel Mary's anguish as she holds her son's cold, tattered body and recalls rocking her newborn; we stand with John at the foot of the cross, somewhere between hope and despair. We feel the Centurion's bewilderment, Magdalene's grief, and Nicodemus' wrenching regret. "These are the people who can become our guides as we seek to commit ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually to Jesus and his teaching," says Alborghetti. Each chapter offers questions and topics for personal reflection or group discussion, making this an inspiring and cherished companion for all who seek deeper participation in the body of Christ. This book reveals the meaning of the most momentous act in human history - the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This epoch event was predetermined by God from before the beginning of time to accomplish His eternal purpose. Although there is no truth of greater importance to God's people than the meaning of Christ's death on the cross, it is astonishing that there is no truth of which there is greater ignorance among professing Christians. Although they know they are saved by faith, very few Christians know how to live by faith. Consequently, they trust Jesus as Savior and hope one day to go to heaven but, in between, they struggle vainly to live in this sin-sick world by the best of their ability and often mistake their self-effort for faith. This is not only tragic, it is alarming because God's people can be ignorant about a lot of things, but if they are ignorant about the cross, they are in real trouble. As God said in Hosea 4:6: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." The author clearly explains the glorious mystery of the cross, which is the key to understanding the whole gospel. Salvation is only the beginning and not the end of God's purpose for His people, for the cross of Christ is the door that leads to eternal union and intimate friendship with God.This book also contains an appendix with practical answers to thirty frequently asked questions regarding the meaning and application of the cross of Christ. All proceeds from this book go to support Christian evangelism and provide aid to members of the body of Christ in need.
