The story behind the innovative widebody jet’s “troubled but also path-breaking development,” with hundreds of photos (Airways). With the launch of its superjumbo, the A380, Airbus made what looked like an unbeatable bid for commercial aviation supremacy. But archrival Boeing responded: Not so fast. Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner would generate more excitement—and more orders—than any commercial airplane in the company’s history. This book offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the first all-new airplane developed by Boeing since its 1990 launch of the 777. With hundreds of photographs and diagrams, Boeing 787 Dreamliner closely details the design and building of Boeing’s new twin-engine jet airliner, as well as the drama behind its launch: the key players, the controversies, the critical decisions about materials and technology—the plastic reinforced with carbon fiber that make this mid-sized widebody super lightweight. And here, from every angle, is the Dreamliner itself, in all its gleaming readiness to rule the air.

On January 16, 2013, Boeing had its newest and most advanced aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner, grounded worldwide due to fires that started in the airplanes batteries. The Lithium-Ion technology used in the 787 aircraft was a new feature used in commercial aircraft as a solution to save weight. Several prior delays had already affected the introduction of the Dreamliner 787, one of the most revolutionary planes to date. Boeing is faced with high demand, costs, and pressure to respond quickly, while responding to both safety concerns and general industry concerns and loss of revenue.

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A, The University of Liverpool, language: English, abstract: Founded in 1916, at the Puget Sound location in Washington State USA, Boeing is the largest aircraft company in the world, manufacturing commercial aircrafts, military aircrafts, satellites, weapons and electronic defence systems. It has a history of being the best aircraft company in leadership and innovation to design leading aircraft designs. The company uses advanced technology, engineering skills and innovative leadership to design and develop its products. As a result, it is the best in the USA and worldwide, serving many other nations with commercial and military aircraft. To remain innovative and competitive, in 1990s Boeing started considering a replacement of the Boeing 767, due to slow rate of sales. By 16th December 2003, Boeing announce that it was going to assemble the 787 jet in its factory located at Everett Washington . In building this plane, the company focused on reducing the time line from 6 years to 4 years. Instead of contracting the plane from scratch, it was going to outsource parts and issue sub-contracts to other companies in other nations. The process of production requires raw materials and labor, which take time to procure and manage for the companies to come up with the right products. For the Boeing company to produce the 787 parts in the USA, it would have incurred high costs in procurements and a lot of management logistics. To cut down these costs, outsourcing was a nice way out that provided the company with the ability to enjoy the availability of skilled labor and raw materials in the outsourcing companies.

Global Partnering written by Sveinn Vidar Gudmundsson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.

This case recites the history of the Boeing 787 partnering process with suppliers. The case covers the complex web of partnerships Boeing was involved in and how relational issues contributed to the long delay and cost overruns of the program. The reasons behind the global partnering strategy appear solid: Selling aircraft has changed, the big customers are all over the world, the politics are complex, the risks are higher, the resources are more distributed, and the financing has become unsurmountable for a single company. Although the 787 program is now running well, will lessons learned spill over to other programs? Will Boeing's future partnerships become more adversarial rather than trust based? The case raises the question if Boeing in its new aircraft programs following the 787 should continue the global partnering network in the same way as for the 787: should the network be scaled down, stay the same, or be taken further?
