When ten-year-old Timothy Bacher's dad starts having an affair with Timothy's dream girl, and he doesn't turn up on Timothy's birthday, Timothy is devastated. He decides to run away from home where his parents are constantly fighting over his dad's affair. He meets Rufus, the new King of the Swamp! But Rufus is a man on a mission. He is here to turn your bathroom into a restroom for the swamp! Rufus' list includes Hip Sing Kwok, the Triad boss of bosses and some girl who hurt him and left him for dead. One man, Big Ted, oiled by big business money, wants to be mayor of Miami and get rid of the swamps and the likes of Rufus by turning the swamps of Miami into billion dollar pleasure resorts. He is unstoppable and favored to win. One woman, Sugargirl Rust, who lost her family in a car accident has just discovered that the culprit is now walking free. She had dedicated her life to saving abandoned pets of Miami. Now, she decides to run for mayor of Miami and put things straight. Not only does she want to save the swamp environment, but her sanity too. She took to the bottle when her loved ones were killed. Now, she is afraid she might start drinking again, and never stop. Rufus, King of the Swamp decides to help Sugargirl try and win the mayoral race. The odds are against her winning. Rufus' methods are unorthodox and awaken a new wave of fear for the people of Miami. Soon enough, unexpected visitors start turning up and bodies start piling up, with some disappearing into the swamp's digestive system. Rufus is already seeing beyond the seat of Mayor. The governorship will soon be up for grabs. Next, he flicks his tongue, and a neon sign flicks ahead, in his imagination: The White House.

Throughout history, swamps have been idealized and demonized, purged and protected. Today, they are simultaneously considered metaphorical places of evil, pestilence, and death, and treasured as diverse biological ecosystems teeming with life. Covering not only swamps and bogs but also marshes and wetlands, Swamp ventures into the cultural and ecological histories of these mysterious, mythologized, and misunderstood landscapes. Anthony Wilson takes readers into swamps across the globe, from the freshwater marshes of Botswana’s tremendous Okavango delta, to the notable swamps between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, to the peat bogs in Russia, the British Isles, and Scandinavia, which have been used as energy sources for centuries. It explores ideas and representations of wetlands across centuries, cultures, and continents, considering legend and folklore, mythology, literature, film, and natural and cultural history. As it plumbs the murky depths of swamps from the distant past to an uncertain future, Swamps provides an engaging, accessible, informative, and lavishly illustrated journey into these fascinating landscapes.

One of the strangest and, sadly, least known tales by Hans Christian Andersen, The Daughter of the Swamp King is complex and comprehensive. It covers great distances, long spans of time, transitions between real and imaginary worlds, and a variety of challenges and conflicts. The author relentlessly exposes his characters to the crises of perception, faith, conviction, and inner strength. How they venture through these tribulations and whether they stand all these trials successfully is for the reader to discover and decide.

This definitive collection of work from Hans Christian Andersen—one of the immortals of world literature—not only includes his own notes to his stories but is the only version available in trade paperback that presents Andersen's fairy tales exactly as he collected them in the original Danish edition of 1874. Recognizing the literary merit of Andersen's own simple colloquial language, which Victorian translators and their imitators very often altered to sentimentalize or vulgarize, translator Erik Haugaard has remained faithful to the original text. The fairy tales Hans Christian Andersen wrote, such as "The Snow Queen," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Red Shoes," and "The Nightingale," are remarkable for their sense of fantasy, power of description, and acute sensitivity, and they are like no others written before or since. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected and retold folklore, Andersen adopted the most ancient literary forms of the fairy tale and the folktale and distilled them into a genre that was uniquely his own.
