"The Book of Banff is an honest, thorough, no-holds-barred guide to local culture, history and nature in Banff National park. A handbook as well as a survival guide, it provides keen local insight into attitudes, habits and values that can make a visit or stay in Banff relevant, interesting and rewarding. It is the definitive introduction to what you need to know to be a "local" in Canada's first national park. Bob Sandford came to work in Bannf for two months in the summer of 1970. He never left. The Book of Banff is the sixth in a random series of books describing the magnificent distractions that have prevented him from leaving the Rockies." -- provided by author.

The Banff–Bow Valley in western Alberta is the heart of spiritual and economic life for the Nakoda peoples. While they were displaced from the region by the reserve system and the creation of Canada's first national park, in the twentieth century the Nakoda reasserted their presence in the valley through involvement in regional tourism economies and the Banff Indian Days sporting festivals. Drawing on extensive oral testimony from the Nakoda, supplemented by detailed analysis of archival and visual records, Spirits of the Rockies is a sophisticated account of the situation that these Indigenous communities encountered when they were denied access to the Banff National Park. Courtney W. Mason examines the power relations and racial discourses that dominated the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and shows how the Nakoda strategically used the Banff Indian Days festivals to gain access to sacred lands and respond to colonial policies designed to repress their cultures.

John O'Neill's gothic short stories, set in the Canadian Rockies, are haunted by the violence inherent in nature and humans. The mountains are majestic and impassive. The characters are surprising, bent, but also empathetic. Their survival is tenuous. A two-sister team of goth tour guides offers guided excursions up switchback mountain trails; a paroled convict thumbs his way into the life of a family driving west; and an animal pathologist, while performing a necropsy on a grizzly bear, has an unusual encounter with both technology and humanity. Goth Girls of Banff is a superb collection, sharply written, with plot turns as consequence-laden as those on an iced-over mountain road.

Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... friends the Duke Alexander of Gordon, the patriotic Earl of Findlater, and the Earls of Fife, &c. But, like numerous other families, it is almost without a representative in the town, and makes us exclaim--" What a change fifty or a hundred years makes in our social circles." I, who am not quite an octogenarian, have seen four representatives of the Dukes of Gordon, four Earls of Fife, four of the house of Findlater and Seafield, four of the Lord Banff Family, four of the Gardens of Troup, four of the Gordons of Park, &c, all more or less connected with the town; and where are our own great denizens who held a dignified place among us?---the Duffs, the Diroms, the Gordons, the Donaldsons, the Youngs, the Ogilvies, the Shands, the Gardens, the Abercrombies, the Forbesses, the Innesses, the Saunderses, the Urquharts, the Alexanders, the Cassies, the Grants, the Reids, the Abernethys, the Strachans, the Kyles, the Lawties, the Bartlets, the Roses, the Souters, the M'Killigins, the Robertsons, the Gilberts, the Chalmers, the Wilsons, the Cordiners, the Bruces, the Russells, the M'Kenzies, the Smiths, the Wisemans, the Williamsons, the Cruickshanks, the Camerons, the Pringles, the Leslies, the Imlachs. Alas! many of them in our old kirkyard. Banff being the county town, and therefore the seat of the Sheriff Courts for the county, it may be proper to notice that the Society of Solicitors of the county was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1840, and the Society has a free fund of upwards of 2000. The solicitors have a good library. The Court House is at present quite unsuitable for the business of the Court; but arrangements are presently in progress for the erection of a new and handsome building on a site on Low Street, nearly opposite...
