Excerpt from The Island of Capri The writings of Gregorovius, well known in Europe, are less familiar to American readers. This is, I believe, the first translation which has appeared in America of any of the books of this interesting writer. It is a single chapter of his charming work called "Wanderjahre in Italien." Those who may be led by its perusal to seek the other productions of this author will enjoy the same pleasure which the translator has felt in her present labor. The view of Tiberius taken by Gregorovius, though it is generally received, has, as is well known, been seriously questioned by recent scholars. But the translator has not felt at liberty to modify the expressions of the author on this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The British in Capri, 1806-1808 "Val piu avere amici in piazza, che danari in cassa." "I veri amici sono come le mosche bianche." These two Italian proverbs may be translated "Rather a friend on the square than gold in the bank," and, "A real friend is as rare as a white fly." They are particularly applicable to Capri where the Piazza (the square, the market-place), with its Terrace is the hub, or centre, of life. In fact, it may be said that in Roman times, when a Roman Emperor lived there, Capri was the hub of the universe. Appealing to my many friends on the island, I feel sure that more than one will treat this peep at the period when the British were in occupation of Capri with kind consideration! Before the present War, which began in August, 1914, there were two ways of reaching Capri - one by land and one by sea, and both by Naples. During recent years, the sea in the midst of the land, the Mediterranean, has become more and more a sort of German lake, with landing-stages all round it. The North German Lloyd Company despatched their steamers, like huge floating palaces, which, outward and homeward bound, touched regularly at Southampton. The size and accommodation of them were enormous; the company, the food, the Rhine wine, and the music, - "Life, let us cherish!" Excerpt from The Hermit of Capri There remains with me the abiding picture of you as, on that warm September afternoon, you turned and walked away so straight and dainty all in white samite, your five-feet five really appearing to grow taller in your departing distance, your wheat-gold hair more golden in the glowing sunset. I had said: Good-bye. God bless you. And you: How shall I know that you are - are all right? And I, again: I will write, if you will permit. You had bowed with a smile of assent in your moist, clear gray eyes. It is to that departing figure, under the rose of that smile and to those honest eyes I write. We had spoken of many things as we walked: of your ambitions in your profession, your love for the children you taught, your misgivings as to your ability to accomplish the good you desired, and, finally, you left me to infer from your exclamation, as we neared the gate of your home, Oh, I want to be doing some thing in the world, to take my part! Thatyou contemplated the possibility of your abandonment of the work which you had often said you felt to be your calling, to yield to that universal beckon of Nature to her children; but at whose special behest you left me to imagine. I was not left in doubt that there was some one, yet in those maidenly eyes came a forbidding mist as a veil through which I might not intrude. Our parting had come-had it not? And so, I, lonely, among the crowd Of passengers on the liner remembered the Vision and our talk of many things, and, oh, I do not like your Mr. Call - or whoever that some one is! Excerpt from Et Tu, Sejane: A Story of Capri in the Days of Tiberius The island of Capri, or Siren Isle, as many call it, lies, as is well known, at the mouth of the bay of Naples, and is supposed to be the island to whose shores Homer describes the adventurous Odysseus as being lured by the voices of sirens. The isolated position and wild beauty of the island so appealed to Augustus Caesar, that he obtained it from the Greeks in exchange for Ischia, and made of it a lovely retreat adorned with splendid palaces. Thereafter the island remained for many generations the private property of the imperial house of Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
