Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was an American author and poet. She was born in Rahway, New Jersey. After finishing school she worked as a librarian for the Rahway Library Association. Her first book, At the Sign of the Sphinx (1896), was a collection of charades. Her next publications were The Jingle Book and The Story of Betty (1899), followed by a book of verse entitled Idle Idyls (1900). After 1900, Wells wrote numerous novels and collections of poetry. She wrote a total of more than 170 books. During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humour, and children's books. According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), around 1910 she heard one of Anna Katherine Green's mystery novels being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unravelling of the puzzle. From that point onward, she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among her most famous works are: Patty at Home (1904), Marjorie's Busy Days (1906), The Gold Bag (1911), Marjorie's Maytime (1911), Marjorie at Seacote (1912), Patty Blossom (1917), Vicky Van (1918) and Patty and Azalea (1919).

Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis, better known as C. J. Dennis, (1876-1938) was an Australian poet famous for his humorous poems, especially The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke, published in the early 20th century. At the age of 19 he was employed as a solicitor's clerk. It was while he was working in this job that, like banker's clerk Banjo Paterson before him, his first poem was published. He later went on to publish in The Bulletin, as Paterson and Henry Lawson had also done. The three are often considered Australia's three most famous poets; though Dennis's work is less well known today, his 1916 publication of The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke sold 65,000 copies in its first year, and by 1917 he was the most prosperous poet in Australian history. The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke and numerous spin-offs published subsequently related the everyday adventures of the title character Bill, his girl Doreen, his friend Ginger Mick, and other characters. The poems are written in dialect, and present The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke as a typical larrikin.

This is a collection of nonsense verses. The volume was written for no reason on earth and with no earthly reason...Murder is a bad thing and so are nonsense rhymes. There is often a valid excuse for murder; there is none for nonsense rhymes...So you see nonsense like a little learning is a dangerous thing and should be handled with as much care as the shotgun which is never known to be loaded..." But what," you may ask, "is the object of the nonsense verse?" Most assuredly to make one laugh...Nonsense is the salt of life with which we season the dry food of everyday cooking.

Henry Lawson (1867-1922) was an Australian writer and poet. He is among the best-known Australian poets and fiction writers of the colonial period. Lawson was born in a town on the Grenfell goldfields of New South Wales. He attended school at Eurunderee from 1876 but suffered an ear infection at around this time that left him with partial deafness and by the age of fourteen he had lost his hearing entirely. He later attended a Catholic school at Mudgee, New South Wales. He was a keen reader of Dickens and Marryat and serialised novels such as Robbery Under Arms and For the Term of His Natural Life. Lawson's first published poem was A Song of the Republic which appeared in The Bulletin, 1887. This was followed by The Wreck of the Derry Castle and then Golden Gully. Most of his work focuses on the Australian bush, such as the desolate Past Carin, and is considered by some to be among the first accurate descriptions of Australian life as it was at the time.
