This new title covers the curious world of reptiles and amphibians, both common and rare, found in the Indian faunal limits. There has been no book to rival J C Daniel's earlier Book of Indian Reptiles, also published by the Bombay Natural History Society in 1983. He has now presented an entirely new text of not only a large number of reptiles, but has also described frogs, toads, and other amphibians, a much neglected group that is revealed in this book as picturesque, and biologically interesting as any other group of animals. This book contains field observations and photographs, and descriptions of 175 species including 53 snakes, 45 lizards of various groups, 31 tortoises and turtles, and 45 amphibians. Almost each species has been illustrated with the line drawings, photographs and reproductions of paintings from the Journal of the BNHS. The book satisfies professional zoologists, amateur naturalists, students and the interested general reader alike. There is a reference section with reptiles and amphibians listed separately. Photographic contributions from several members of the BNHS, add contemporary appeal to this exciting new field guide, which also contains snippets of historical information.

The reference source that biologists interested in West Indian herpetofauna have been waiting for.--Steven Reichling, curator, Memphis Zoo A state-of-the-art compendium. The West Indies is one of the hottest of the world's biodiversity hot spots and will continue to be a focus of ecological research, now invigorated by this definitive synthesis.--S. Blair Hedges, Pennsylvania State University The West Indies have become a major focus for biologists and conservationists. Its herpetofauna is considered one of the richest and most vulnerable in the world. These fragile natural environments are home to many unique animals that occur only on these islands. Loss of habitat, development of scenic areas for a burgeoning tourist industry, and the introduction of invasive species have contributed to an already tenuous situation for many of the region's native species. This volume summarizes the natural history of each of the more than seven hundred species of frogs and reptiles that live in the West Indies. Sure to be the starting point for all future research on West Indian amphibians and reptiles, it will be an essential companion to the biologist contemplating or conducting research in the area.

Amphibians And Reptiles Of The West Indies written by Albert Schwartz and has been published by University Press of Florida this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with History categories.

This meticulous book summarizes all available information on West Indian herpetofauna. Using data from more than 6,000 pages of field notes and 1,000 literature sources, Schwartz and Henderson present a detailed account of every known reptile and amphibian species existing on the numerous islands of the West Indies. For each (almost 600), they offer a complete synopsis, including description, holotype, source of illustrations, and range map. A section on natural history summarizes what is known about the habitat, microhabitat, economic bearing, food habits, and reproduction of each animal, and in some cases it shows how these traits change from island to island. In opening remarks, the authors plead eloquently for awareness of the rampant environmental degradation taking place on the islands. For every herpetologist, biologist, ecologist, or biogeographer with an interest in the Antillean biota, Amphibians and Reptiles will become the source from which all future research proceeds.

Excerpt from The Reptiles of British India The coincidence of several most favourable circumstances, which seemed to promise a fair success, induced me to entertain the idea of making the Reptilian fauna of British India the subject of a special work; and I was confirmed in this, as I had frequent opportunities of observing that such a work would supply a real want among a class of men residing in India, who, imbued with a desire to promote Natural History knowledge, are deterred by the want of a work which would guide them in their first steps to acquainting themselves with objects coming daily under their notice, and which would show them where and how new facts may be gathered. As this work is the first attempt to comprise the entire Reptilian fauna of the continent of the Indian region, it must be in many respects incomplete, although I trust it will form a basis for the labours of future times. Every one who makes the fauna of a country an object of special study has a triple task before him: first, to distinguish and systematically to arrange the species as exactly as possible; secondly, to make himself acquainted with their habits; and, thirdly, to ascertain the geographical range of each variety, of each species, of each genus. A perfect knowledge of the species is the first condition, without which progress in the two latter respects is impossible; and it is much more the part of that zoologist who is furnished with a complete series of the objects for repeated comparison and examination, and has access to the thousand volumes through which descriptions and notes are scattered, than of the naturalist and collector who has the opportunity of observing the animals in their natural haunts; on him mainly devolves the fullfillment of the two latter tasks; but scarcely anything has been done in this respect as far as the Indian Reptiles are concerned, and therefore my work, in its present shape, is one of abstract science. I have enjoyed the great advantage of unlimited access to collections accumulated in this country from the time of Russell. A considerable number of the types used by this pioneer in Indian Ophiology are still preserved in the collections of the British Museum and of the Royal College of Surgeons; the types, with a very few exceptions, of the species described by Shaw, Gray, and myself, form part of the collection of the British Museum. Cantor had sent invaluable collections, containing his types, to the University of Oxford, where a part of the specimens, with his early manuscripts and drawings, are still preserved, and at a later period to the Museum of the East India Company, which contained also a number of the types sent by Kelaart and Griffith.
