Onias, a holy man of Jerusalem, had, in the people's opinion, obtained, by his prayers, rain from heaven 'in a great drought. The people thought, as did Balak in Balaam's time, that curses would be as effective as prayers. Therefore they pressed him to curse Aristobulus, and all who were with him. The old man, pressed by their importunities, lifted up his hand toward heaven, and prayed thus: "0 Lord God, creator of the univerte, since thote who are with us are thy people, and they who are betieged in thy temple are thy priettt, I pray that thou tcouldtt hear the prayer of neither of them againxt the other." The multitude became enraged, and Atoned to death the good Onlafl. The Romans were largely bribed by Aristobulus. Thoy forced ArCtas to raise the siege. Aristobulus pursued, routed, and slew great numbers of the army of Hyrcanus. Pompoy, the celebrated Roman general, was now at Damascus. Hyrcanus and Aristobulus pleaded their causes before him, first by their ambassadors, afterwards in person. The people declared against both. They said they were not to be governed by kings, but by the priests of God. Pompey hesitated. Aristobulus prepared for war. Pompey seized him in one of his castles, confined him m prison, and laid siege to Jerusalem. He was received in the city by the party of Hyrcanus. He besieged the temple and the Castle Baris, and took them in three months time. Though the Jews had observed, during the Maccabean wars, the law which they had made to fight, if attacked, on the Sabbath, they considered that they were not attacked when they aw the Romans arranging for attack their works...

.Why Bother With History? argues for an increasingly important role for a revitalised historical study. Examining the motivations of past historians, the author rejects the ancient aspiration to a 'history for its own sake' and argues that historians' importance lies in their own adoption of a moral standpoint, from which a story of the past can be told, that facilitates the attainment of a future we desire. Inevitably controversial, in that it challenges many of the assumptions of modernist history, this is an interdisciplinary book, which draws in particular on psychology and literature.

Excerpt from Ancient Civilization an Introduction to Modern History The purpose of this book is indicated on the title page. It is written to meet the needs of classes which can devote only a brief amount of time to the study of Ancient History before taking up the study of Medieval and Modern History. The "Committee of Five" of the American Historical Association recommends "that if it seems wise to omit any detailed study of ancient history and to give three years substantially to the other three blocks, the teacher, while omitting all detail, may still attempt to give his pupils some idea of the growth of the ancient nations, and some idea of their achievements and their qualities." With this aim in view, only such details of the political history of antiquity have been here included as are necessary for an understanding of ancient civilization. Furthermore, only such elements of the life of the people of antiquity have been emphasized as arc necessary for a thorough comprehension of the history of Western Europe in modern times. The book is written especially for the use of pupils in the first or second year of the high school course. The point of view of boys and girls fifteen or sixteen years old has therefore been kept in mind in the selection of details and in the wording and arrangement of the text; and also in the choice of maps and illustrations. The maps arc adequate for making clear the geographical references in the text. Several large pictures have been made to illustrate the text - an object seldom attained by the illustrations in ancient histories. These pictures are carefully designed to arouse the imagination of the readers, and to assist them in realizing the conditions of life in ancient times. Acknowledgment is due to Mr. Morris C. Deshel, teacher of history in the DeWitt Clinton High School, for his assistance in getting together the material for this textbook, and for the preparation of the references given under the Search Topics. For helpful criticisms, also, the author's thanks are due to the history teachers in the DeWitt Clinton High School and in the Julia Richman High School. The Shock Of The Ancient written by Larry F. Norman and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-15 with Education categories.

The cultural battle known as the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns served as a sly cover for more deeply opposed views about the value of literature and the arts. One of the most public controversies of early modern Europe, the Quarrel has most often been depicted as pitting antiquarian conservatives against the insurgent critics of established authority. The Shock of the Ancient turns the canonical vision of those events on its head by demonstrating how the defenders of Greek literature—rather than clinging to an outmoded tradition—celebrated the radically different practices of the ancient world. At a time when the constraints of decorum and the politics of French absolutism quashed the expression of cultural differences, the ancient world presented a disturbing face of otherness. Larry F. Norman explores how the authoritative status of ancient Greek texts allowed them to justify literary depictions of the scandalous. The Shock of the Ancient surveys the diverse array of aesthetic models presented in these ancient works and considers how they both helped to undermine the rigid codes of neoclassicism and paved the way for the innovative philosophies of the Enlightenment. Broadly appealing to students of European literature, art history, and philosophy, this book is an important contribution to early modern literary and cultural debates.
