In 1951 a wave of Phantom Strangler Cases would begin. As they swept across the Northeast few clues would be left in their wake. In 1963 a suspect would be caught and confess to murders from Maine to Louisiana. Although he was in Boston for the first of the Boston Stranglings, he would not talk with the Boston Detectives. In 1965 Stranglings would begin again in Maine and continue on to 1971 some that are still unsolved to this day. With this Book I intend to bring these long forgotten cases back out of the past and shed new light on the facts and evidence, as well as those who committed them.

The New York Times–bestselling account of the serial killer’s rampage and the ensuing manhunt. Now a Hulu true crime thriller starring Keira Knightley. On June 14, 1962, twenty-five-year-old Juris Slesers arrived at his mother’s apartment to drive her to church. But there was no answer at the door. When he pushed his way inside, Juris found Anna Slesers dead on the kitchen floor, the cord of her housecoat knotted tightly around her neck. Over the next two years, twelve more bodies were discovered in and around Boston: all women, all sexually assaulted, and all strangled. None of the victims exhibited any signs of struggle, nothing was stolen from their homes, and there were no signs of forcible entry. The police could find no discernable motive or clues. Who was this madman? How was he entering women’s homes? And what insanity was driving him? Drawn from hundreds of hours of personal interviews, as well as police, medical, and court documentation, this is a grisly, horrifying, and meticulously researched account of Albert DeSalvo—an American serial killer on par with Jack the Ripper.

Several had been stabbed. All had been strangled. Topics discussed include the victims, the atmosphere of Boston, Massachusetts, at the time of the murders, and the man who confessed to the murders, Albert DeSalvo. The evidence against DeSalvo, reasons DeSalvo confessed to murders he may not have committed, theories about who the Boston Strangler really was, and DNA evidence are also highlighted. Features include a Tools and Clues section that highlights research tools, technology, and investigative methods, a timeline, a glossary, selected bibliography, further readings, places to visit, source notes, and an index. Aligned to Common Core Standards and correlated to state standards. Essential Library is an imprint of Abdo Publishing, a division of ABDO.

Now John Douglas, the foremost investigative analyst and criminal profiler of our time, turns his attention to eight of the greatest mysteries in the history of crime, including those of Jack the Ripper, The Boston Strangler and JonBenet Ramsey. Taking a fresh look at the established facts, Douglas and Olshaker dismantle the conventional wisdom regarding these most notorious of crimes and rebuild them - with astonishing results.

Was Albert DeSalvo Really the Boston Strangler? Handyman Albert DeSalvo confessed to eleven brutal rape/murders that terrorized Boston from 1962 to 1964. The repeat sex offender boasted he had raped an additional 2,000 women. His story became the subject of a bestselling book, a major Hollywood movie, and a Hulu docuseries. But DeSalvo was not The Boston Strangler. Author Susan Kelly’s detailed investigation shows us the true DeSalvo—a pathological liar whose hunger for celebrity drove him to false confessions—and indicates that the stranglings were committed by more than one killer. Exploring stunning DNA findings, a shocking re-autopsy, expert profiling evidence, and other recent developments, she shows why this savage, unsolved case continues to fascinate and haunt us.

*Includes pictures *Includes contemporary newspaper reports about the crimes *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "It wasn't as dark and scary as it sounds. I had a lot of fun....killing people is a funny experience." - Albert DeSalvo "I did this not as a sex act...but out of hate for her. I don't mean out of hate for her in particular, really I mean out of hate for a woman." - Albert DeSalvo The story reads like something out of a mini-series. The police are called to the home of an elderly woman who has been raped and strangled. She's a socialite and popular in among the Boston upper-crust. As the grizzled detective stand over her body, wondering who would do something like this, someone mentions that there was a similar case recently, except that time the victim was a lower-middle class immigrant woman. He wonders briefly if there is a pattern and hopes there isn't, but before long there's a third victim, and then a fourth. At first, the women are all elderly, and the police psychologist postulates that the culprit has some sort of hatred for his own mother and therefore attacks motherly figures. The police begin to track down mental patients with histories of violence and question them about their whereabouts, but there is no one suspect, even as more bodies pile up in the morgue. Then, suddenly, there's a change, and young women start turning up dead, changing the whole approach to the case. As tension in the city builds, the mayor and other civic leaders begin demanding action, even as another young woman dies, followed in short order by an elderly one. Young women start refusing dates and looking under their beds at night, while older ladies refuse to open their doors to anyone. The city is in turmoil and the police are at a loss about what to do next, but just as quickly as they started, the murders stopped after 13 confirmed victims. Just as that description makes it sound, the case of the Boston Strangler is as confusing and mystifying as it is terrifying. In fact, the mythology and debate lingering over the crime spree only heightened when Albert DeSalvo confessed to the crimes, provided both accurate and inaccurate details about some of them, and had his DNA tied to several of the crime scenes. However, before DeSalvo himself was murdered by an unknown assailant in jail in 1973, he had recanted his confession, and ultimately, he was never tried for the murders in Boston. 50 years after the Boston Strangler stopped killing, investigators and amateurs alike are still debating the very messy and all too real 18 month reign of terror that gripped the city of Boston in the early 1960s and haunts many to this day. Even in the wake of DeSalvo's confession, and in part because of the various inaccuracies he told authorities, people continue to argue whether he was the Boston Strangler, or even if the Boston Strangler was just one killer given the seemingly different M.O.s used in some of the crimes. The Boston Strangler: The History and Mystery of the Notorious Crime Spree covers the crimes of one of America's most infamous serial killers. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Boston Strangler like never before.
