Excerpt from The Boy Scouts of Woodcraft Camp In this and succeeding volumes, The Boy Scouts on Swift River, The Boy Scouts on Lost Trail, The Boy Scouts in a Trapper's Camp, I have sought to portray the life of such a school camp under Boy Scout rules. The Boy Scouts of Woodcraft Camp has been written with a twofold purpose: To stimulate on the part of every one of my boy readers a desire to master for himself the mysteries of nature's great out-of-doors, the secrets of field and wood and stream, and to show by example what the Boy Scout's oath means in the development of character. Many of the incidents in the succeeding pages are drawn from my own experiences. And if, because of reading this story, one more boy is led to the Shrine of the Hemlock, there to ih hale the pungent incense from a camp-fire and to master the art of tossing a flapjack, I shall feel that I have not written in vain. Excerpt from The Boy Scouts: On Lost Trail Those who have read The Boy Scouts of Woodcraft Camp, the first book in this series, will need no introduction to most of the char actera of the present volume. Four of them are members of Dr. Merriam's famous vaca tion school in the deep woods, a camp con ducted under Boy Scout law, but with tribes instead of patrols, each tribe having as chief a Scout of the first class. Three of them were principal characters in the second volume, The Boy Scouts on Swift River. On that trip they made practical use of the things they had learned at Woodcraft Camp, and their experiences further fitted them for the severer tests, such as are necessarily entailed by an overland trip through the wilderness, such a trip as in this volume they take in their search for Lost Trail. Excerpt from Boy Scouts of America: A Handbook of Woodcraft, Scouting, and Life-Craft My various papers on Woodcraft and Scouting, herein collected, appeared first, chiefly, in Forest and Stream, 1886 to 1893; St. Nicholas, 1887 to 1890; Scribner's, 1892 and 4; Century, 1900; The Ladies' Home Journal, 1902, 3, and 4, and in Country Life, 1903, 4, and 5. Acknowledgment is made to the editors of these magazines. The Woodcraft and Scouting movement that I aimed to foster began to take shape in America some ten years ago. Because the idealized Indian of Hiawatha has always stood as the model for outdoor life, woodcraft, and scouting, I called its brotherhood the "Woodcraft Indians." In 1904 I went to England to carry on the work there, and, knowing General R. S. S. Baden-Powell as the chief advocate of scouting in the British Army, invited him to cooperate in making the movement popular. Accordingly, in 1908 he organized his Boy Scout movement, incorporating the principles of the Indians with other ethical features bearing on savings banks, fire drills, etc., as well as by giving it a partly military organization, and a carefully compiled and fascinating handbook. All of the last that is applicable in America has been included here, with due credit to General Sir Robert Baden-Powell, and combined with the Birch-Bark Roll. The present issue will constitute the Book of Organization. It will be followed by others, making a dictionary of Woodcraft, with descriptions of the common trees, herbs, flowers, etc., trailing or tracking, sign-language, bird-stuffing, emergency foods, first aid, lasso, boat-building, camp-fire songs and plays, and many other things that belong to camp and outdoor life. Excerpt from The Boy Scout's Hike Book: The First of a Series of Handy Volumes of Information and Inspiration The purpose of this book and of others to follow is to give more detailed information about the special subjects covered than was found practicable in the official handbooks of the Boy Scout Organizations in this and other countries. In order to cover the entire subject of scouting, so called, in a single inexpensive book of convenient size, it has been necessary for the compilers of the different Boy Scout manuals to abbrevi ate, sometimes to omit entirely, matter which a full discussion would necessarily include. The Boy Scout plan of organization provides for Scout Masters and others to fill out, from their own knowledge and experience, the said abbreviations and omissions, in talks to the Scouts, and this has been wonderfully successful. Still there is a persistent demand from the boys for more books. And it is my opinion, based on my experience as a registered and active Scout Master, in charge of a troop of forty members of the Boy Scouts of America, that books such as these I am undertak ing to write are the kind needed. Not that existing practical books on camping, woodcraft, and kindred subjects of especial interest to Boy Scouts are lacking in merit, but simply because they are not written expressly to conform with the Boy Scout plan. As to my experience, it has been my good fortune to do a great deal of scouting in one way and another. The knowledge thus gained has been enriched by my work as editor of various maga zines devoted to outdoor life and recreation, and especially by the friendship of many Sportsmen of wide experience, among them most of the authors of the best outdoor books published in this country during the last twenty years. Naturally, the foregoing is not written for the boy, but for those who properly guard his interests to-day, I am glad to say, more intelligently than ever before.
