"The Boy Who Picked Dandelions" is a picture book that tells how a simple action can inspire lasting relationships and create transformative opportunities. Four-year-old Jack puts a dandelion in his mother Nancy's hair as he says goodbye to her one morning. As a result of that flower, they develop a friendship with Mr. Burke, an elderly jazz enthusiast who Nancy meets at the doctor's office where she works. As Jack grows he develops a keen interest in Mr. Burke's musical knowledge and more importantly for the piano in his apartment. The elderly gentleman happily agrees to pay for lessons for the boy and let Jack practice at his home. The fatherless child and the lonely old man develop a true friendship that changes both their lives. Jack spends many, many hours playing Mr. Burke's piano. When he grows up Jack leads his own jazz quartet and composes original music including a number called "The Boy Who Picked Dandelions" as a tribute to Mr. Burke and his mother. The colorful pictures capture aspects of life during the 50's and early 60's when jazz music was a vibrant part of the urban musical landscape and an inspiration passed from one generation to another.

Sarah Cunningham, a moderate middle-class white girl who grew up in the Michigan countryside, speaks about God with humor and honesty more characteristic of liberal west-coast writers in this Picking Dandelions Ebook. In this warm and witty memoir, she describes finding and keeping a personal faith in the quirky settings of her ultra-Christian childhood. Whether recounting living next to a cemetery, teaching at-risk high schoolers, or listening to her grandmother’s stories about being a British “war bride,” the author weaves faith into down-to-earth metaphors of growth and renewal, planting and reaping, greenery and weeds. In the end, Cunningham succeeds in sifting through the dysfunctions and flaws of human life and discovering pockets of God’s original Eden goodness for both herself and for you.Picking Dandelions is a candid and personal account of outgrowing laissez-faire Christianity, moving into mature faith, and realizing that a God-following person is a changing person ... and you just might follow suit.

"Based on groundbreaking research that has the power to change the lives of countless children--and the adults who love them." --Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts. A book that offers hope and a pathway to success for parents, teachers, psychologists, and child development experts coping with difficult children. In Tom Boyce's extraordinary new book, he explores the "dandelion" child (hardy, resilient, healthy), able to survive and flourish under most circumstances, and the "orchid" child (sensitive, susceptible, fragile), who, given the right support, can thrive as much as, if not more than, other children. Boyce writes of his pathfinding research as a developmental pediatrician working with troubled children in child-development research for almost four decades, and explores his major discovery that reveals how genetic make-up and environment shape behavior. He writes that certain variant genes can increase a person's susceptibility to depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and antisocial, sociopathic, or violent behaviors. But rather than seeing this "risk" gene as a liability, Boyce, through his daring research, has recast the way we think of human frailty, and has shown that while these "bad" genes can create problems, they can also, in the right setting and the right environment, result in producing children who not only do better than before but far exceed their peers. Orchid children, Boyce makes clear, are not failed dandelions; they are a different category of child, with special sensitivities and strengths, and need to be nurtured and taught in special ways. And in The Orchid and the Dandelion, Boyce shows us how to understand these children for their unique sensibilities, their considerable challenges, their remarkable gifts.

The Boy from World’s End is a detailed and honest account of the life and experiences of David Smith. The book traces David’s early education in England, focusing on his experiences of wartime evacuation and life in a remote rural setting at a place known as World’s End Farm. When an exciting overseas journey takes David to begin a new life in Canada, he experiences the difficulties related to being an immigrant, but finds inspiration and encouragement that transforms his life into one dedicated to learning and growth. In these pages, David paints a vivid picture of his past, sharing stories from his family life, as well as the course of his higher education, which led him into his career as a university professor: a role in which he flourished as teacher, author, and administrator. Scattered throughout are stories of the interests, hobbies, and pastimes that enriched his life. While David aspires to share his life story with family, friends and colleagues, his narrative imparts valuable insights for all who read his story. He encourages readers to “know themselves”, that is, to be explicitly aware of the values that guide them through life and to weigh them in its ever-changing circumstances. And he always brings his story back down to earth, reminding us to adopt creative pursuits that connect us with nature and that help us to work through life’s inevitable quandaries and opportunities.
