A few generations ago, college students showed their romantic commitments by exchanging special objects: rings, pins, varsity letter jackets. Pins and rings were handy, telling everyone in local communities that you were spoken for, and when you broke up, the absence of a ring let everyone know you were available again. Is being Facebook official really more complicated, or are status updates just a new version of these old tokens? Many people are now fascinated by how new media has affected the intricacies of relationships and their dissolution. People often talk about Facebook and Twitter as platforms that have led to a seismic shift in transparency and (over)sharing. What are the new rules for breaking up? These rules are argued over and mocked in venues from the New York Times to lamebook.com, but well-thought-out and informed considerations of the topic are rare. Ilana Gershon was intrigued by the degree to which her students used new media to communicate important romantic information—such as "it's over." She decided to get to the bottom of the matter by interviewing seventy-two people about how they use Skype, texting, voice mail, instant messaging, Facebook, and cream stationery to end relationships. She opens up the world of romance as it is conducted in a digital milieu, offering insights into the ways in which different media influence behavior, beliefs, and social mores. Above all, this full-fledged ethnography of Facebook and other new tools is about technology and communication, but it also tells the reader a great deal about what college students expect from each other when breaking up—and from their friends who are the spectators or witnesses to the ebb and flow of their relationships. The physics of nuclear collective motion was pioneered by A Bohr and B R Mottelson 50 years ago. Since then, experimental and theoretical development in this field has been remarkable under the leadership of the Copenhagen group. In the 21st century, a new era has opened up due to the recent developments of experimental facilities, especially radioactive ion beams and large ?-ray arrays. Interest in collective motions is now shared in the research of other quantum many-body systems ? for example, microclusters and Bose-Einstein condensation. It is therefore timely and important to review the current understanding of collective motions and discuss new directions of future study.The main topics of the symposium include recent theoretical and experimental progress in the understanding of vibrational and rotational motions in nuclei. Collective motions of Bose-Einstein condensation and microclusters are also addressed. The symposium invited several keynote speakers to review and discuss our present understanding and to identify future challenges. Oral presentations are also selected from submitted contributions. This book is a collection of talks presented at the International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei, held at Lake Baikal, Russia, on 24 - 28 July 2001. Few Body Dynamics presents the proceedings of the VII International Conference on Few Body Problems in Nuclear and Particle Physics, held in Delhi from December 29, 1975 to January 3, 1976. Invited speakers talked about topics ranging from dynamic equations and approximation methods to computation and experimental techniques, few body bound states, breakup reactions and polarization, few electron systems, and photon and electron probes on few body systems. Speakers also covered few body reactions with mesons and resonances, few body aspects of nuclear reactions and scattering, three body forces in nuclei, and quark physics. Comprised of four parts encompassing 145 chapters, this volume summarizes the status and results from experimental facilities such as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in India, TRIUMF in Canada, and the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility in the United States. It also discusses completeness relations in scattering theory for non-Hermitian potentials, ambiguities in phase-shift analysis, and parametrization of the half-shell function when the eigenchannel has a bound state. The next chapters focus on possible phenomenological forms for the two-body local potential, nuclear three-body forces arising from triple-boson couplings, and concepts such as N-particle transit operators, three-body separable expansion amplitude, the three-body problem with energy-dependent potentials, and the four-body problem.
