Excerpt from The Brevity Book on Economics Economics is a scientific study of man's efforts in satisfying his wants for material things and services. It is an underlying science of business. The entire business world is the laboratory of the economist. The economist is mainly interested in promoting the material well-being of society as a whole. He aims to help improve the general standard of living and to promote better distribution of wealth and income. His task is to study scientifically all the essential factors involved in the promotion of national and world prosperity. To him, prosperity means an abundance of economic goods for distribution and abundant opportunity for all to possess and enjoy the good things of life. Very few economists oppose the individual's right to possess private property; but they all challenge abuses of this fundamental institution, wherein public welfare is sacrificed to the gain of individuals. Because business activities are now so thoroughly cooperative, society must have public rights - designed to make individual rights more valuable and more equitable. Public ownership of highways, of waterways, of schools, and of similar "public utilities" which can clearly render better service when owned by all the people, is now generally advocated. But all the costs should be considered before making extensions of public ownership. Government ownership and regulation are treated in Chapter III with the question of monopoly. Now, the co-founders of Axios have created an essential guide for communicating effectively and efficiently using Smart Brevity—think Strunk and White’s Elements of Style for the digital age. They also share communications lessons learned from their decades of experience in media, business and communications.

The Concise Guide To Economics written by Jim Cox and has been published by Ludwig von Mises Institute this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Business & Economics categories.

To understand economics is to understand the practical case for freedom. The great merit of this book is to bring out the connection in the clearest and shortest possible way. The Concise Guide To Economicsis a handy, quick reference guide for those already familiar with basic economics, and a brief, compelling primer for everyone else. Professor Jim Cox introduces topics ranging from entrepreneurship, wages, money, trade, and inflation to the consequences of price controls and anti-price gouging laws. If it were read alongside the daily newspaper, it would undermine most all the fallacies that appear nearly every day. Along the way, he defends the crucial role of advertising, speculators, and heroic insider traders. Thus does the book combines straightforward, common sense analysis with hard-core dedication to principle, using the fewest words possible to explain the topic clearly. And each brief chapter includes references to further reading so those who are curious to dig deeper will know where to look next. The popularity of this book has been growing for several years. A website dedicated to itis already very popular. One organization dedicated to public activism buys it by the hundreds, viewing it as the shortest and best way to counter economic fallacy. The Concise Guide makes a great gift to those who have never thought about the workings of economic logic, and thereby misunderstand the case for free-market capitalism. From the Introduction by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.: "The beauty of Cox's book comes from both its clear exposition and its brevity. He offers only a few paragraphs on each topic but that is enough for people see both error and truth. Sometimes just mapping out the logic beyond the gut reaction is enough to highlight an economic truth. He does this for nearly all the topics that confront us daily. "Many people only have a moment. That's why the guide is essential. It is probably the shortest and soundest guide to economic logic in print. May it be burned into the consciousness of every citizen now and in the future."

Brevity in conversation is a window to the workings of the mind. People use ellipsis and various kinds of pragmatic enrichment, keyed to the particular conversational setting, to express concisely what they mean. Distinguished linguists, philosophers, and cognitive scientists here say how.
